The biggest risk, IMHO, is the trust Saban had in him when coaches couldn't be around.

I agree...and had we given him an on-field position, we'd still lose that since he wouldn't be allowed to be around then since he'd be a coach. Kind of a catch-22...

It hurts us two-fold:
1) Currently, we no longer have an extension of Saban (whom the players love) that can be around the players during the off season.

2) Kirby hired him away in the middle of the 4th Quarter workouts; Kirby knows the 'Process' and was undoubtedly aware of it. Doubt the timing of this hire is coincidence...

If we can hire Aaron Feld, that'd be awesome. I think it would mitigate much, but not all, of the hit we're taking...

Yea, I mean we gotta find a new guy that fits that mold. I trust Saban's judgement there as much or more than anything he does. He's known this was possible and maybe coming for a few years now, I'm guessing he has a very specific list of guys (and a roster of them around the country that started here).

I fully recognize what Cochran brought to the table and know that the wrong hire could really be a disaster......but I also think that there are other guys who can step in and be similar guys who also might bring some forward thinking to the S&C program.

And I really do think there is something to the idea that after 10-12 years sometimes it is good to shake things up. That doesn't come without risks, but I think it was time.

I believe this 100%. I think it was needed for all parties involved

I heard this news on JOX this morning. The guy's been great for the program, but I never understood why we threw so much money at him when Kirby tried to get him the first time. Not concerned about this at all.

Agreed. He was very instrumental but I feel like people are way overreacting because of how long he’s been with Saban. I mean you have herbstreit saying shite like this:

quote:

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Herbstreit called it “a significant loss for Bama” and “a ridiculous coup” by Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart. The ESPN analyst suggested that the move could be the first sign of a “changing of the guard” in the SEC.

A changing of the guard because of a S/T hire? Ok.

And the fact that Cochran wasn't hired to do the same thing.

The only significant part of this is Cochran leaving Alabama. Cochran at Georgia is......I mean he's a special teams coach now. It's a pretty small piece of the puzzle for them, even if he's great at it and is a good recruiter.

The story is Alabama and what we do.

I wonder if Cochran had become lax in his job the last couple of years because of wanting to be an on field coach?

Probably will be a beneficial move to both us and Cochran if we can get someone like Field.

I just listened to the Cover 3 Podcast specifically about the Cochran move, and Barton Simmons' summary of the situation, referencing the words of sources across the landscape of CFB, was that:

1) In S&C circles nationally, Cochran was never considered an elite S&C Coordinator. He wasn't considered bad or anything, just not anything special. To that end, Simmons said Nick Saban may not be all that upset about getting a new S&C Coach from a S&C perspective.

2) People in the athletic facilities directly said that Cochran was a principle reason for the establishment and maintenance of the Bama/Saban toughness factor, and his loss is huge in the "team character" department. Not that it can't be replaced. It's a statement about the fact that it HAS to be replaced because that guy is walking out the door.

And yes, in the end, it was considered to be likely good for all parties, assuming Bama makes the right hire. Cochran was not considered to be a plus hire regarding coaching for GA. Might be a great recruiter, though. They ended the podcast joking about how coaching with 9 (instead of 10) on field assistants was the recent norm, and GA is likely comfortable coaching with 9 again next year. Got 10 recruiters though, still.

Yep - that sounds about right. From a S&C perspective this move is not a negative at all - and might be a positive.

From a managing the program perspective this is one of the biggest losses of the Saban Era, but one that Saban has almost certainly planned for over the last 4-5 years. But there is definitely risk there if the new hire doesn't provide a similar level of program level assistance that Cochran did.

It'll be interesting - I'm actually a little bit excited to see what the next guy brings to the table. Doesn't mean it will be better or worse, just different.

Interesting tidbit that means nothing -

Shaud Williams is apparently Aaron Feld's assistant.

Cecil's comments about Saban not kicking Coch out the door, but leaving the door unlocked for him were telling. There can be no question that two very distinct things have happened the last 2 years at Bama:

1. Bama has not been a physically dominant team the way they were from 08-17. At best they were on par with other top teams, and the defense straight up got pushed around in 18-19 at times in ways that had NEVER happened before under Saban. That's just a fact.

2. The number of injuries, particularly lower body injuries the last 2-3 years were not only alarming, but almost unbelievable. We either had the worst stretch of injury luck in history, or something was behind the scenes contributing to this phenomena. I don't believe in luck, so...

All that to say, we will miss his influence with the players, but at the end of the day, we could end up with an upgrade.

My guess is Shaud would replace Aaron at Oregon, but it not, it would be awesome to have him on our staff at Alabama.

When are people going to realize that Saban is the system? Cochran was important to us, don't get me wrong, but coordinators and other assistant coaches have come and gone very liberally since Saban arrived in 2007.
