Yeah, they were good but this defense is very talented in a offense heavy world.

What I was meaning to say. The rules favor offenses in 2020 more so than in 2012. Even Saban has said it. It's a different day and time. But this unit is talented. Golding scares me though.

Ah, if you read further down, the guy admits that he's painting a best-case scenario for ND. Everything would have to go right for them and everything wrong for us, but anything can happen.

He does make a couple of good points about their offensive gameplan. Anyone that's watched Alabama this year will know that wheel routes against our linebackers have about a 99% success rate. If Book starts running on us it could be a long night too.

That being said, stopping both Smitty and Harris (almost impossible) will still leave you to deal with Metchie, Billingsly, and even Slade. You're going to have to outscore us to beat us and that likely means 40+ points.

Any discussion of Notre Dame possibly beating Bama is nonsense. It won't be happening.

Florida used the wheel route against us and had some success but Moses read the play and had to get a PI to avoid a touchdown. Florida had so many big play weapons and they were on fire calling plays. Notre Dame will have to be like Florida in their play calling and just go for broke.

Hope our players don't prepare with this mindset.

quote:

They got torched by Texas A&M and Georgia that year.

That A&M performance was far from great but they still held them to well below their average in terms of points, yards, and ypp. I’d considered it a massive accomplishment if any of these defenses the past 3 years held the 3rd ranked offense in the nation to 29 points. Just the following year, that 2013 defense gave up 42 points and 600+ yards to A&M.

Against UGA they gave up 21 offensive points (UGA had a blocked FG return for a TD) to a team that averaged almost 38 ppg. Also held them below their seasonal averages. I know circumstances aren’t really the same but this defense held a much worse (before they had Daniels in) UGA offense to 24 points.

quote:

Notre Dame was average in the NCG. LSU was very close and had the dramatic ending. Auburn sucked, Miss. State was average.

As if the offenses this team played has been so much better. They should get credit for shutting ND out until basically garbage time. They should get credit for holding MSU to 7. Because that’s what no.1 defenses do. And they gave up 17 points to LSU. It’s not elite but it’s still solid. The offense deserves more blame for it being close.

That 2012 defense gets not enough credit despite finishing no.1 in the nation in total and scoring. So it’s funny when people (including many on here) absolutely gush all over that 2011 defense despite them playing FAR worse offenses.

I don't get why people are mad they are being hopeful.

What should they say? We suck and are going to get beat by 50?

I don't even see anything outrageous. They are just trying to think of ways they will win and people here are in their feelings about it because how dare they!

We should win.. big. However nothing is guaranteed in life. Just glad Saban and the players don't have this mentality because if they were mediocre like that they wouldn't achieve greatness.

2014 easily. Probably 2013 too. Those teams really weren’t great talent wise as far as who was starting

2020 D doesn’t hold Manziel and the 2012 Aggies to 29 points

3. Is weird. Yes... he's not mobile but his pocket mobility is legitimately elite. I don't think I ever see many NFL QB's move that well in the pocket

I think pressure can certainly help, but I don't think it's 100% going to be a nail in the coffin type deal like many college quarterbacks

I don't really have any major gripes about the others. Smitty can get bracketed a la but he's still tough to cover (+ other receivers unlike 2014), Najee is stoppable with pressure, and they can certainly target our LB's with tight ends. Albeit I definitely think you have to take a Belichick approach and choose between Najee/Smitty, only one can be shut down at a time IMO.

Other fanbases will laugh at this, but in this case it's true. Only Bama will beat Bama in Dallas.
If the Tide comes out expecting to win and plays nonchalant, a la 2014, it will be a grind. Brian Kelly is the best coach we're going against this year.
Absolutely can't overlook this game and just go through the motions.

granted, nd is better than they were in the natty. especially at qb. however, book is not trask, nor does book have trask type weapons. if nd cant score with bama, they cant beat bama.

Only way I see them truly scaring us is if we go out there and shite the bed. I'm talking false starts, drops, whiff blocks etc. I don't pretend to know them like a ND fan but if they can't control the LOS with 4-5 guys they'll be picking their poison and get a healthy dose of it.

This.

A lot of ppl don’t consider how offenses are forcing defenses to change.

My only issue is his comments about Mac Jones. Lawrence being worlds better etc. I highly disagree from many statistical standpoints.

1. Commit 100 percent to stop N. Harris on the ground.
2. Put a man over the top to stop Smitty.

You can't do both of these things. At least not typically. We will see what impact the loss of Dickerson might have on the ground game.
