Have you ever stopped to think about how LONG it's now been since the "Dark Times" era?

Obviously, whenever Bama loses, we'll be quick to bring up how life under DuBose, Fran and Shula was and how just being ranked was considered an accomplishment, how success was never sustained and losing streaks vs SEC foes was common place, even in our own house.
But 2020 is upon us.
As someone who was can remember Saban rolling into the Tuscaloosa airport like it was yesterday, it's weird to think of how long it's been.
2020 will mark 14 years since our last losing season, 12 years since our last non 10 win season. Most college students at UA don't have conscious memories of non-contender Alabama.
Does anyone else find talking about struggling Alabama to people is starting to feel like talking about East Germany or cassette tapes?

All the time. Those were my college years.

Compared to Arkansas' team this year, even 2000 for Alabama seemed like a warm sunny day

Class of '98 here. Got Stallings' last year and then the Mikes epoch.

Most of that dark era as you call it was due to sanctions. We're the only conf team to win at least 1 conf title every decade since the SEC was formed.
We've had 5 coaches win a national title and 4 of those won multiple titles.
Shula, Dubose and Fran all had 10 win seasons. Dubose won a conf title and Fran would have had us in Atlanta, but we weren't eligible due to sanctions.

A lot of those years are a bit of a blur for me in that they’ve started to overlap a bit. But some things stand out:
Walking from the stadium in the rain after losing to Louisiana Tech in 1997.
Let’s just go Louisiana Tech in 1999 too.
The crushing disappointment that was the opening season UCLA game in 2000.
Actually just all of 2000 basically.
Brandon Avalos and Spencer Pennington’s adventure at Georgia.
Mike Shula’s epic disaster at Fayetteville in 2006.

My freshman year. Signed on to this pain train after the 4-7 season. Knew we'd eventually be back, but not like this.

I remember back when I used to get excited that we might get some 4 star guy and would dream that those six 4-stars and the 1 5-star guy that we had on the roster would make us great. I remember when we would have a four-star qb come in and we would all think that we had it made. Then they would wash out and transfer. Now days I am a little ticked if anybody is below a five star.

Older people will say that the years after Coach Bryant got pretty Dark too. I grew up on Bryant, watched the roller coaster that was Perkins, was a walk on on Coach Curry's last team and on Coach Stallings first team. Those weren't sanction years, but they also weren't all roses either. Perkins yearned for the NFL but he knew and understood our rivalries. Curry was an outsider that even though he got us to 10-0, he didn't beat the Barn. Coach Stallings, we lost the first 3 and A LOT of people questioned that hire. Then DuBose, Francione and his rope, Rolling Mike Price, and the Walmart brand bandaid, Mike Shula. I'm still thankful to this day that Coach Moore stayed persistent and brought Coach Saban to Tuscaloosa. I'm just enjoying the ride.

and that night in B'ham. That Bama team quit in the 4th. I think it's the only time i ever saw a Bama team just throw in the towel 21-0 is not a good indicator of how bad Southern whipped Bama in B'ham.
Just crazy how hyped that 2000 team was at the start of the season. Went to UCLA and knocked the QB out, took a punt back and then physically dominated by the bruins

My first freshman year Bama lost to a Vandy team 30-21 that would finish 5-6. On homecoming. Bama finished with a losing record but we did manage to beat au that year somehow...

Sophomore at UA right now. I remember the Iron Bowl loss in 2006 because I watched it at a skating rink and this other 6 year old came rolling by and yelled that Alabama sucked because I was decked out in a S. Alexander mini-jersey and Bear Bryant hat. I waited for him to come around the second time and tripped him and sent him tumbling. I jumped on top of him and it was a whirlwind between both of us before my dad grabbed me. I had to wear his old Auburn hat everywhere for a week after that.
ETA: I didn’t know much at that point but I remember hearing about Nick Saban everywhere and knew it was a big deal when we got him. My first year of really watching every second of every game was 2008. I’ve been spoiled. Everyone my age has.

There are guys who are sitting on our bench now that would have been our best player back then.

I feel like a lot of younger Bama fans don't have a real grasp of reality. I'm not sure they're appreciating it as much as they should. Hell, that goes for a lot of the older guys too. We have gotten spoiled. We won't see another run at Bama that approaches this in our lifetime. Enjoy it - even when we fall short of a NC. There will be years in the not too distant future where you'd love to go 10-2.

Bama was spoiled by Bryant and let the rest of cfb passed them by. Instead of updating facilities, implementing more exciting offense, etc. The leadership stuck to the Bryant coaching tree and insisted that tradition was all we needed to remain a power.
I think those days are over, and as long as we stay on top of things we'll remain a power in post-Saban era. Don't know about ya'll but there are some exciting young coaches coming up (Joe Brady, PJ Fleck, Jim Leonhard, Matt Rhule).

For me the worst was walking out of the stadium in the rain after being shut out by Auburn at home in 2000 by 9-0. Miserable day in every sense of the word.
