Yall gotta stop with the Wrightsell hype. He is coming off an achilles and a season ending knee injury the year before. I hope he is able to contribute in a big way. But to expect him to be a top threat is foolish. He is not going to be anything more than a spot up shooter.

All these Wrightsell starting lineups seem super optimistic. It would be great if he was a solid bench contributor.

I fully expect Philon and Holloway to play the most minutes of all the guards, whether Holloway starts or not. Those two probably lead the team in minutes and scoring, although I guess Bethea is a wild card (and maybe Wrightsell, but again that seems optimistic to me).

His minutes will come down to rim protection. Sherrell's potential offensively isn't in question, but he has to be a very reliable rim protector. He made good strides late in the year but if you drag him away from the basket (high ball screens and dribble hand offs) he struggles to recover. That's not being overly critical, it's just the reality of what I interpreted as his greatest weakness last year and a big part of why his minutes were what they were. And that's not to say he won't, Bediako made huge strides defensively in his 2nd year and really became the best defensive center in the SEC by the time conference play began his sophomore year. He absolutely humiliated the returning NCAA player of the year and from that point it was on.

Yep, agree with all of this. It’s easy for freshmen big men to look lost defensively, but Bediako is a perfect example of the leap they can take when they figure it out.

Sherrell might not have that high a ceiling defensively, but he’s also clearly got more offensive potential.

I suspect Holloway will start whether we get Claude or not, but he’s fairly clearly going to be towards the top of the list minutes wise anyway. Seems like the heavy favorite to lead us in scoring at this point.

And I do think we’ve done a good job of having a roster around him that makes sense, although we could use another creator to let us take advantage of his spot up shooting.

Yeah he should still shoot it well. I guess the questions for me are a) can he just stay healthy, and b) is he limited athletically because of the injuries? He was a good defender before all this.

Speaking of needing a second creator, I thought he showed flashes of that two years ago. Even though we didn’t really need him to be.

Plus he’s literally one of the best shooters in the country, and before all these injuries a good defender. But he’s just a complete wildcard.

I’d be cautious about expecting too much from Wrightsell. I think he can still contribute but just name the player..Kobe, Durant, Cousins, Klay Thompson..nobody is ever the same after an Achilles injury

I’m not expecting much of anything. Really good player but he’s had back to back serious injuries, and the second was the worst you can get.

They’ll probably manage his minutes. If he’s a valuable bench contributor by the end of the year, it’s a huge win. If he’s healthy enough to be a starter, it’s massive.

Need to surround Holloway with length and guys that can defend (at least a bit). Plus we need another creator. Seems like a good fit.

The roster construction seems to make some sense given that. Pretty good size across the board outside of Holloway.

Looks like a nice pickup. Stat line is impressive, and everyone needs big wings that can defend. Could possibly give us some smaller lineup options too.

Only stats-based caveat to me is: the shooting looks a bit less impressive when you see he’s averaged one 3 pt attempt per game over his career, and he’s a career 66% FT shooter. He took 1.8 3s per 100 possessions last year; Dioubate took 2.3 per 100 possessions for us. Seriously low volume.

But he’ll be encouraged to shoot more I’m sure, and if he could just hit 33-35% or so, that’d be more than fine if he’s a good defender, rebounder, energy guy, etc.

Coward’s efficiency numbers are kind of absurd, even given the smallish sample size and competition questions. 59/39/83 shooting numbers for his career.

But I’d also be fine with Rylan. He was good for us a sophomore, and we need some big wings.

Obviously we shot obscenely well, but they just didn’t guard anyone.

It sort of reminded me of some of the bad Gottfried teams where we’d always complain about teams randomly getting hot against us. And a lot of it was because we made their shooters extremely comfortable from the opening minute of the game.

Same for last night. We were just walking into open 3s. You had these sort of fake contests from BYU players who were playing way off the shooter, etc.

Youngblood went 5-11 from 3 and can barely make a game recap.

I thought we had pretty good energy on defense too. Awesome night.

They got some severe home cooking tonight, and still they complain.

My favorite home cooking sequence was at the 8 minute mark of the second half when Cardwell literally tackled Holloway on a drive and then the refs had the gall to call one of their bullshite touch fouls on Broome the next trip down. Gotta protect that guy at all costs for some reason.

Philon, who’d been struggling pretty badly for a while, with a clutch run with the game tied 81-81:

Driving layup: 83-81
Drives and kicks to Dioubate who gets fouled: 84-81
Drives and kicks to Youngblood for 3: 87-81
Hits a 3 after the Dioubate and Youngblood scramble: 90-81

Dioubate and Youngblood had some nice moments there too, but Philon was involved in everything.

Needed it too, with the Holloway foul trouble.

Maybe this has been discussed already, but that game had some crazy numbers in terms of ball security, turnovers, etc.

Our five starters committed 1 turnover, combined. For the whole game. And all five starters played at least decent minutes (Cliff had 17, Jarin 21).

Sears and Philon combined for 15 assists and 0 turnovers, which are numbers you just never see.

We had 8 turnovers overall, 7 coming from bench guys. Jarin had the 1 turnover committed by a starter.

Incredibly efficient stuff from everyone, but especially the starting five. So good I'd be sort of questioning the defensive intensity if I was an Oklahoma fan.

Happy he’s coming back, clearly our best RB this year.

But he wasn’t sniffing the third round, that’s a relatively high pick for a RB these days.

I haven’t even gotten to see it yet but Cliff, Nelson, Stevenson, Reid, and Sears is just a fricking weird starting lineup.

I get that overall minutes and crunch time lineups matter more than who starts, but Stevenson starting 4 straight games is also curious given how’s he’s played.

Sherrell was 1-9 in 10 minutes, fricking let it fly. 1-5 from 3.

In his defense, he also managed to grab 7 rebounds (5 offensive) in 10 minutes
Reid has an interesting skill set. He’s not there yet but his 3 point shot looks pretty smooth, and he could be a monster defender.
RB jumps out to me as the biggest need for an upgrade, even if it’s not the most important position group.

re: Milroe - a softer perspective.

What a weird game. *Outside of all the turnovers*, that was about as good as Milroe gets. Some legit great throws (including the dropped TD).

Milroe was terrible, but we really want to put Ty Simpson in with this group?

CJ Dippre is probably our 3rd best skill player behind Williams and (massive gap) Bernard.

Shocking lack of talent. How do we not have a RB?

Deboer was awful. Terrible decision after terrible decision. This isn’t excusing his (or Milroe’s) performance.
