Also, we NO LONGER RECRUIT thumper types at ILB and that has been the case for several recruiting cycles. The Murphy kid who got some snaps on Saturday, he and Lawson appear to be our future ILBs, neither are thumper types. We want ILBs who would have been safeties in the past.

Don’t forget Blackshire. Assuming they get adequate coaching and development this offseason, which is a huge question mark as it currently stands, I think Blackshire as our downhill “thumper” backer and Lawson as our sideline to sideline ILB could be a formidable duo in the middle.

I'm interested to see how our ILBers shake out because there's Murphy, Lawson, Campbell, Blackshear, Ian Jackson, Kennedy, etc. Will any of these guys hit the portal?

mlb'er has been a snoozefest ever since golding arrived. thats cns's fault for forcing him to coach a position he had never coached before. as for the scheme, i hate the bend but dont break crap. because it ends up breaking more often than it should.

look, my brother and i have come to the conclusion that this team suffers, moreso than the previous 2, suffers from the perfect storm. a change in the way they tackle. a change in the s&c program. a change in both offensive and defensive scheme, with both coordinators being subpar. all of this has come together to wipe out the bama standard. this doesnt even include the fact that players are cashing in with nil money, regardless of how they play.

Yep you are absolutely correct. Our defensive performance against this Auburn team was far from acceptable, all things considered. Given how one-dimensional their QB was, the success they had running the ball against us was (still is) staggering.

there is no philosophy to the defense this year. here's what I mean. let's stay with auburn game. although you can find this in every game.

sorry for the huge picture. This is my Golding frustration distilled into one play. this is immediately after the snap on the qb power that would result in AU's first score. All 22 guys in the camera frame.

First thing, I've watched this play 20 times. I'm not messing with you. Look at the red arrows. 5 sets of eyes go with the Robertson motion. Barn is hoping to get one of our guys looking the wrong way. We give them 5. Why do 5 of our kids think this is their assignment and none think they have the QB?

One the motion, Branch is sprinting back to the middle of the field. Why? They don't want to throw the ball. Certainly not with 6 lineman and a TE who caught one ball this month on the field.

Hard to see, but Koolaid is waving, perhaps yelling at Hellams to stay put. Why is my senior free safety with 30 starts this lost?

AU is in heavy personnel (6 OL and a TE). We're in nickel. My degree is in electrical engineering which means I'm not a genius but I think I do ok applying logic. Seems like base 3-4 matches up better against this grouping. Maybe someone can explain what's happening here in terms I can understand.

If you let this play run, Anderson, Koolaid and Hellams are never really in the play. Lawson's first two steps are to his right. Barn ends up with 9 guys to block our 8. 7 really because Young and Oatis end up in the same gap, effectively canceling one of them out. Battle actually turns this play back inside but Young is out of position, Lawson gets caught in the wash and Branch overran it which is moot because the guy was already 10 yards down field anyway.

There's too much focus on complex scheme and not enough on fitting gaps. old fashioned assignment football. our kids look confused. 12 games into a season. Golding has overthought this defense to the point that it doesn't make basic football sense.

Nice subtle brag. Congrats on the big brain.

You hit the nail on the damn head right here. That's why I call him Whiteboard Pete.

Anyone hear the rumor that Pete was out drinking last Saturday after the game and said some things about Saban... Assuming too good to be true?

It was discussed on TI this morning. A guy claims he has a friend that heard it. Talking negative about Saban and our NIL program.

Saban would have been stroking out on the sidelines knowing auburn run at will on us and we couldn't do anything to stop it.

Imagine this scenario w/ Freeze:

Pruitt as his DC
Phillip Longo as his OC with a Drake Maye transfer as a cherry on top.

I would put better odds on Golding being named HC in waiting than to be fired. Saban clearly doesn't share our sentiment

Thanks for posting.

I still don't really understand what happened this season.

Is Golding a drunk? What is the reason for all of these stupid arse defensive schemes this season? Why did everyone on our defense seem to get worse from the last year? Its straight up ODD. Guess Saban should have canned him after he got that DUI.

Pete Golding had his moments, and maybe even comes up with some schemes. He is awful at translating that to something that is teachable to the players. Plus he always seems one play behind the other team. It's rare he can consistently call a decent stretch of plays. Very little in the way of halftime adjustments

Pete seems to be decent when he's got a couple of weeks to plan for a specific opponent. His defenses in the playoffs have been pretty good. Still not up to our standards, but better than they were during the season.

I think the issue is the complexity. He can't take the scheme on a week-in, week-out basis and tweak it -- in an understandable way for the players -- to attack the opponent's offense with the most advantageous approach. I think HE understands what everyone should do in a given situation, but he can't translate it.
