The system itself is too complicated. I've heard it from multiple former players. The way players move from team to team, we need a system that a player can step in right away and contribute.

As bad as Golding is, we need a system change.

I think the issue is the complexity. He can't take the scheme on a week-in, week-out basis and tweak it -- in an understandable way for the players -- to attack the opponent's offense with the most advantageous approach. I think HE understands what everyone should do in a given situation, but he can't translate it.

This begs the question of whether he's just hamstrung by having to run Saban's defense and concepts? I'm curious how much freedom he has when it comes to running the defense how he wants.

Could you imagine if he took a DC job somewhere else and all of sudden looked as good as people (i.e. Saban and other coaches) say he is?

That's a whole 'nother discussion in and of itself. I'm of the opinion that the defensive scheme needs to be overhauled. Not scrapped, but revised significantly. We KNOW our two biggest areas of weakness are mobile QBs and a hurry-up style of play which limits substitutions -- two areas that play havoc with a complex defensive approach that requires all 11 players to handle their assignments perfectly to execute properly.

I think Pruitt was seen as so successful because he was able to simplify the defense as needed to allow the players to be more aggressive. Honestly, I think that's the only real difference now between Georgia and us -- Schumann (and Lanning before him) is apparently good at that, and as a result Georgia's players rarely look confused or are out of position.

If our players understand what to do, and do it correctly, we're as close to perfect on defense as you can be in this day and age. The problem is, I don't believe all 11 players regularly know what to do on any given play, and even when they do, they don't do it correctly. It doesn't happen on EVERY play; we're still very good. Just not as good as we all know we CAN be, especially with a veteran-laden squad.

I totally agree, spot on.

Watching the Uga defense against Tenn was like watching Bama’s D in 2011. Just Dominated the LOS with smart LB controlling the edges. Saban’s defenses in that time was just so dominating and made it look easy. Hell, I was more excited watching the defense take the field than I was the offense

It’s the one thing I want to see before Saban walks away, build one more legendary defense.

What Trent Richardson said earlier this year was very telling.
He went to a practice & basically said the defense is not hitting & tackling as hard as they did when he played. So what we have is much softer practices which translates to how horrible our tackling is on gameday. Look no further than the Auburn game. Thank goodness we had Bryce. I bet Kirby has their De still hitting hard & working on tackling in practice.

Saban's standards have dropped from himself, his coaches, and his team. This is why if he keeps the coordinators, Saban's status will start to need evaluating because the decline is definitely real at that point…. The sad part is if this is true, Saban cannot truly evaluate himself honestly and understand when it’s time to step away from the game. I'd bet he goes through a decline similar to Bowden with several declining seasons. Bowden averaged 5 losses his last 5 years. I don't think Saban would wait that long, but unless changes are made, we could several season similar to this one. Maybe worse. This off season is critical.

I wonder if the rash of injuries we had a few years ago (the year we lost every LB, it seemed) changed the way we practice. Strength and conditioning was also blamed and we made a change there, but one has to wonder if CNS decided that intense tackling in practice was dialed down to more thumping.

For me to believe this, I'd have to see Golding accomplish something. Prior to getting the Bama job, his resume was Delta State, Tusculum, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, UTSA. There's really no reason at all to believe he can coach at this level. He only had two years of FBS experience as a DC before taking the Bama job.

Bottom line, his resume being as it was, this was a lazy, joke of a hire by Saban.
Bad coaching hires = losing to lesser talented teams, out of the playoff.

Would we wait until after ESD to get rid of both OC and DC? Or do we wait until after the bowl game or NSD? I say the sooner the better.

I agree on the sooner the better, but I would bet on any moves being made after the end of ESD (12.23). Particularly since Pete is known as a very good recruiter.

If a change is made before then, it's likely because of some extenuating circumstance.

Don’t see him being let go prior to signing day. But I hope he’s packed and ready to hit the road the very next morning after.

"Now, we don't have studs on our defense? The way Bama recruits if there are no studs on our current defense we just need to close the whole damn program because that would be a massive misuse of a recruiting budget." Offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebacker--tell me who they are other than one def end? Where are all of those NFL players to be?

Well before this season, we had multiple safeties that looked like NFL players, not sure why they regressed this year other than coaching.

31 and 15 will be first round picks, Mckinstry will be a first rounder, maybe Ricks too. Oatis looked like a stud on the DL as a true freshman in a lot of games.

Sadly, I have to agree with this! Be it lack of progression, lack of coaching, lack of whatever....I do not see anyone that just stands out like players from the past have!

Even if Saban keeps the coordinators, he could start sending out feelers for new coaches now. Especially for OC since both parties know a parting of ways is coming. BoB is already getting his name out there. That way there could be instant changing of the guards when BoB is gone. Who knows whats going on with DC. I just pray Pruitt is in the mix.
