Does anybody still think Bryce Young may win the job and start versus USC?

I figured Mac would start even if Bryce went through spring practice but now I am convinced. Bryce could win the job during the season but we have seen how hard headed Saban can be benching upperclassmen in favor of better guys that just showed up. Womack over Wills in 17. Jalen over Tua in 17. Leatherwood probably should have played more in 17. Just a few examples. I think we can win a lot of games with Mac but can we beat a Clemson or OSU with him? Depends on the defense we field I guess. I like Mac but I am really hoping that Bryce lives up to the hype and takes the job at some point this year.

He’d probably have to be definitively better than Mac for Saban to make that call. Besides the fact that Mac is pretty damn good, Bryce won’t have a lot of time to prove this

No..he wont have time to win the starting job over a veteran. But if the Veteran falters then I can see him taking over mid season. They will probably have some run option packages for him, especially in short yardage situations where the D expects him to run and then he hits a long pass.

No way he starts early. My hope is that Saban gets him lots of meaningful playing time the first half of the season, so that if we need to make a switch later on, Young will be ready to ball out. Please don’t put him in to hand the ball off, coach.

No. Without injuries forcing his hand Saban doesn't play freshmen over upperclassmen unless the freshman in question is elite and the upperclassman with the starting spot isn't any good. Young may do his part by being elite, but Mac is pretty good and is going to do well enough to hang onto the job. This isn't a Tua v. Jalen situation. Mac is a much better passer than 2016-2017 Jalen and it took an entire half of zero offense in the fricking national championship game for Saban to pull Jalen. Mac will start until and unless he proves totally incapable of moving the offense, which isn't going to happen because he's a pretty good QB.

Mac doesn't get a lot of respect, even from Alabama fans.

He's a much better QB than a lot of folks think, IMO.

Tua was an anomaly and Young may be also, but Saban has won a lot of games with QBs who weren't.

I don't think so, but I am just an internet message board poster.

This. All the stuff about Young replacing Macorckle is nuts. It would be one of coach’s absolute worst moves ever. One does not encourage guys to work hard to fend off the guys you are going to bring in but then throw them over for a younger guy who is not better or minimally so. Especially not just to keep a younger guy from leaving. If Mac does a job/wins championships, but Young just won’t wait, I for one will be ready to see him go. Have some humility and patience. In the end, Alabama football is not about particular players and placating talents. It’s about a team and winning as one.

with usc and uga 2 of the first 3 opponents, i can't see any type of change, baring injury. especially with no spring practice. i do hope cns give young more meaningful snaps than he did tua, early and often.

Yep. Mac isn't Tua but he throws a nice deep ball, plays pretty fearlessly for a dude who isn't exactly built like a tank, and is apparently pretty universally liked and respected by the rest of the team. That'll go a long way with Saban. My only concern with Mac is turnovers, and the Iron Bowl may be clouding my perception of that.

The turnovers may come with nerves, which I think that Mac may be a bit susceptible to. However, he has the humility and team first spirit to hand the ball off until he feels confident.

For the record, you won't see me show my arse this year like I did in 2017 when Jalen struggled to throw the ball. I took a step back and saw what I had to look like to my peers and realized I had to change the way I view things and especially how I choose to communicate my opinion. Right now my opinion is that Mac will probably win the job in fall camp easily as Bryce gets adjusted to the speed of the game. Bryce will play if he earns it and we will go from there. If Mac is having a good year its gonna be hard to pull him even if Bryce is lighting it up. I honestly am more concerned with how the defense is gonna play than I am about any part of the offense.

Mac will take the field against USC. I expect a Tua/Jalen season-long conversation

Agreed.

Mac Jones impressed in the starts he made, those two pick sixes against Auburn aside. He still balled out in that game and had our team in a position to tie the game and send it into OT. That being said...Bryce Young has a lot of hype around him and, if he's even half as good as they're saying he is, it's going to be difficult to keep him off the field this fall.
