OT but David Pollack laid off by ESPN today
I prefer pollack to that annoying loudmouth Pat McAfee.

They both suck. ESPN has gone downhill so fast. I could say more but this is not the politics board.

Golding should have been gone after the 2020 season. His defense gave up huge numbers at times and we all know how undisciplined they’ve been with penalties. The lack of communication between players was frustrating to see too. I respect Saban but I think that he made a mistake not making a change from Golding a couple of years ago.

All I said was I want a defense from Saban’s best years.
His best days are behind him. There’s no way we are winning 6 more titles under him.

Well it took him 16 years to win 6 titles. So I doubt he’s coaching until he’s 88.

He won't but we're already in the process of making Robo Saban. They're going through to test run to install his "Aight" quote in his speech function lol.

I’m ready for some real news and updates on how the team is looking.

Practice should start in about a month.

Yeah, I think the first day will be Friday, August 4th.

Really excited about Caleb Downs.
This is a guy that could potentially change the perception of the secondary. I know we’ve had some good safety’s lately, but maybe they lacked instincts or something to make the big plays.
I miss the days of MB4 and Fitz out there making plays all over the field.

Curious what defenses you are referring to here

I think having a sideline to sideline elite NFL caliber safety is one of the checkmarks on whether an Alabama defense is a great one or merely a good one.
Downs appears to check all those boxes. Excited to watch him for 3 seasons.

Add a badarse LB while we are at it

While I agree with having a badass LB, with todays modern offenses, you need safety’s and pass rushers more so.
I do think our ILBs have been soft lately, or maybe just whiffing tackles.
Idk, I just think Golding fricking sucked. Dude had too many guys in coverage that couldn’t cover.

With these really good qbs we have gone against lately, getting to them quickly seems to do more damage than coverage. You can only cover someone for so long.

I agree. I think Golding’s flaw was he tried to use LBs too often in coverage. This gave the QB time to read the defense and find a hole.
I will say though, if you can shut down the run you limit their playbook. A lot of times we gave up chunk yardage runs due to the ILBs whiffing and DL getting pushed back.

It’s just hard for me to say we missed on recruits… I mean how often do you get 3 five stars and 10 four stars and half of them are mediocre?
The dudes are getting drafted, but the defenses weren’t elite enough statistically to show it.
A lot of people try to defend Golding saying he was still top 10-15 in defense, but any team giving up 30+ multiple games a year isn’t winning a Natty. There’s no reason to not be top 5 in defense every season with our recruiting.
Unless your offense is just scoring 50 plus every game, which ours wasn’t.
