Everyone is anxious to know how the conference’s future scheduling is going to look. We know how the 2024 season will play out, even if there are no dates attached to the matchups. As for 2025 and beyond? It’s wait-and-see mode.

Well, Saban may have hinted at the SEC choosing to go with the 7+1 model instead of 6+3. He was asked about Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC and expressed how he is in favor of players having the opportunity to play every team in the conference.

“The way we’re gonna do our seven-team rotation, one-team fixed,” Saban began. “I think you’re gonna play everybody every four years, so almost every guy at your school is going to play every team in the conference. Which I think is great as well.”

Saban is not the only coach in the state to potentially let the scheduling model slip. Auburn‘s Hugh Freeze said he will miss playing Georgia recently, fresh off the two playing each other. Freeze may have been the first to hint at the 7+1 and Saban is another data point.

“I’ll miss playing Georgia every year because I just got to experience it for my first time and I loved every minute of it other than the outcome,” Freeze said. “I love competing against those type teams. And so there are some changes coming.”

I know this isn’t the most popular idea, but since the conference is getting too big and can’t handle multiple permanent rivals, I think teams like AU-UGA and Bama-Tenn should continue to schedule each other as a non-conference game when they roll off the schedule.

There’s no rules against it, and actually a precedent for it (cant remember who/when but I remember not too long ago two conference teams playing each other outside of the conference schedule). And if the rivalry and tradition really is important to the schools, they’ll make it happen.

Personally, I’d rather Bama continue to play Tennessee each year they are not on our conference schedule, as opposed to some random mid-teir power 5 or group of 5 school.

ETA: thinking further, if the conference is going 7+1, so 8 conference games out of 12 games, then I think it is very doable. On a year Tennessee is “non-conference” game, we can still play one other quality, big name non-conference opponent, plus two cup cakes. When they are on our conference schedule, allows Bama to play two quality, big name non-SEC teams. Having 10 important, non-cupcake games each year will be much more fun for us as fans. And it would always help our strength of schedule for a playoff committee.

ETA2: Dont understand the downvotes. I’m not Greg Sankey and didn’t choose the 7+1 model. But it’s the reality of the situation apparently and what I describe is the only way to protect the Third Saturday in October. Unless maybe a lot of people are full of shite and don’t really care about the tradition after all

I believe little or nothing Hugh Freeze says. This is the guy who said on national TV that Ole Miss wasn't cheating and he double dog dared any school to turn him in, and then something like 12 SEC teams in turn did turn the Rebs in.

I GUARANTEE you he's ecstatic not to be playing UGA every year. Knowing how Auburn has all their weird luck in the world, their permanent SEC east opponent will probably be Vanderbilt.

There will not be an sec east opponent.

There will only be one permanent opponent, AU. For them it will be us. You will havre 16 teams. So Us, plus Au, leaves 14 teams. We will play AU + 7 one year, the next we will play AU + the other 7.

Wasn't he supposed to be the next big thing? Like a top 5 player in the nation coming out of hs? What a miss.

Despite being in the class of 2019 he has yet to actually stick with a team long enough to dress for a game, so he might have a few years of eligibility left.
