We never really know if it’s a good hire. These G5 coaches are a crapshoot. He was OC in the SEC under a coach who is an offensive coach. Then he goes to South Florida and they have looked good in the AAC, but you’re one of the biggest schools in the AAC and located in Tampa surrounded by talent. One could say that So Fla is probably the best gig in the AAC(Tulane and Memphis would be the other two candidates)

In 3 years he’s finished 5th, 6th, and 4th in his conference.

Maybe he’ll be good. Harsin looked good at Boise. Napier looked good at Louisiana. Track record kinda shows they don’t really know what to look for in a coach.

Only time will tell if it is a good hire or not. More often than not, these coaches (with good records) coming from smaller leagues seem to be chewed up and spit out once they make it to the big leagues.

They’re betting on him being able to replicate the offense that he had at Tennessee in 2022 when they beat us in that shitfest of a game with the crooked officiating. We had no idea that he would play us as close as they did in 2023. 2024 was DeBoer’s first season and we still blew them out in the second half. Maybe the talent that Auburn has at quarterback and wide receiver will make him look like a genius. As you say, it’s a crapshoot.

They will put up huge numbers against inferior teams just like the Viles and then struggle with solid ones. 8-9 wins a year.

Actually a good hire for the Barn. Solid coach, should get them to 6-8 wins fairly soon - if they can buy some talent.

Golesh doesn't really have a good record though. 4-4, 4-4, 6-2 in the American. USF was a dumpster fire when they hired him to be fair, but this is very much a high ceiling, low floor hire. His teams don't play defense at all and win a lot of track meets. It's better than the other hires they could have made because of the high ceiling aspect. Guys like Durkin and Kelly were never going to accomplish anything. Golesh might.

Kodi Burns is an electrifying quarterback that can beat you with his arm and legs. Kodi Burns is ultra quick in the pocket and virtually impossible to stop in a one on one situation. Kodi Burns is the type of quarterback that can put so much pressure on a defense because of his ability to make a play outside of the pocket. Kodi Burns is also a good passer that shows all the throws. Kodi Burns is a "Michael Vick" type of signal caller and very exciting to watch.

lol indeed.

The first game in Tuscaloosa was pretty legit, but even there it fell apart into a blow out.

The next year was next to meaningless since it only showed USF was capablle of containing.... Tyler Buchner.

ScAUbinsky not even trying to have a positive take on the hire is interesting. Especially considering the general consensus seems to be it's a better one than most people expected they'd make. I wonder if this was an AD hire and not a booster hire. If so, watching them turn on him immediately will be hilarious.

This is a placeholder hire. Heupel won't be at Tennessee in three years. If Golesh can get Auburn to a respectable level, Danny White will hire him as Ut's next hire.

That's not the resume Auburn was looking at...they saw:

Was OC for Tennessee in 2022 who Beat Bama

Was HC for USF in 2023 and 2024 who Almost Beat Bama

They're obsessed and they'll never be the program they could be until they start making winning titles their focus instead of beating the state's flagship university.

I think Golesh is a good coach but it's a risky hire for Auburn. If you're going the G5 route, you want someone a bit more dominant at that level. Yeah the offense will be fine but that defense will suffer and Golesh gets to learn life in the SEC. I think it's a bad match for both parties tbh
