Bama fans sure do love the back-up QB.

Even when he's never even donned the crimson jersey and he's still in high school.

Jesus christo.

was the fan favorite from start to finish.

He had a year on P Sims and AJ RS is first year here. The position was up for grabs as Sims just arrived at campus that spring and a lot of people thought Sims was the better QB that spring. Even that fall Sims was still splitting time with AJ. Just saying.

I truly believe that Tua will not RS and that the staff will allow him the opportunity to get snaps on a regular basis. We can not get caught in the position we were in this year with no suitable backup and having Hurts run as much as we do have to be prepared in case of an injury.

I think we will see a lot of Tua if he can prove his ability but I see no way that Hurts is not the #1 going in and out of the spring. I have yet to see Saban do that with a returning starter.

Also for all the ones that seem to be quick to replace Hurts name a true freshman QB under Saban including AJ who was redshirted that came in and has done as well as Hurts.

When was the last time UA was 11-0 with a true freshman.

The amount Hurts runs, we need a backup.
There will come a time, Hurts gets banged up and we'll rely on the second stringer.

I don't see it unless Hurts regresses and Tua is the TRUTH.

Not likely. It'll come down to how well Hurts progresses throwing the ball. We aren't a balanced team, currently.

And for me, it's basically that.

I think a lot of fans were encouraged that Saban was deciding to go to a more balanced offense, with a genuine dual threat qb that could take advantage of the current rules that favor the offense and run/pass option type plays. Teams with lite dual threat qbs, after all, are darn nigh the only teams that have beaten us for years now.

Now though, so far, Hurts has been a great running qb, but he is a very inconsistent passing qb. We can't fully take advantage of this great receiving corps. Even Saban has said it in so many words..."we need to get more proficient hitting the receivers downfield" type comments.

Hopefully Hurts can get consistent. I don't think it's going to be this year, but maybe by next year. If not, then there is not a thing in the world wrong with still wanting that true dual threat qb that can run AND pass consistently. If Tua is that guy, then awesome (I did say that hopefully Hurts will get consistent). He has to actually sign and enroll first, though, or it's an entirely moot point.

edit: Well,we've been a balanced offense, run/pass ratio, most of Saban's tenure. What we were missing, as noted, was the option of the qb as a legitimate threat to win with his legs as well as his arm= true dual threat.

Laughable. It's far more likely he never sees the field and transfers away.

They have similar skill sets, but Jalen will have year of experience on Tua. I'm guessing the better passer of the two will win if their running game is similar.

Jalen better bust his butt this offseason on his passing game. Tua isn't coming to sit the bench.

No, what Hurts has done and the poise he has played with this young is rare. To expect it to happen back to back is not realistic.

You act like Hurts isn't an anomaly. He came to Alabama in the middle of his senior year of HS and he was SEC ready. He has stepped in and has become one of the top QBs in the country as a true freshman playing in the SEC. That's not rare, that is basically unheard of.

To assume that Tua is going to do something even similar just because he was good at football in Hawaii is a very large reach.

What makes you think that he won't? By all accounts the guy is a workaholic.

Unless Hurts gets injured, that is exactly what he will be doing.

Yea - on top of underestimating how difficult it is to be even an average SEC QB as a true freshman, Jalen played high school football in Metro Houston. Tua plays football in Hawaii. I have to imagine the football maturity for Tua is going to take a bit longer. He just simply will not have seen anything anywhere close to what he will see at Alabama while on the islands.

No doubt...Jalen is the son of a coach too and has been living breathing football since he is probably 5 years old....the competition in Houston and Texas is on a different planet than what they have in Hawaii

If we win a title with Hurts, it will be all but impossible to unseat him....Hurts has won over the team and I don't see another freshman unseating a veteran with a ring.

I hope Tua shows up and is ready to play, but considering 97% of true freshman QBs are not, and considering Tua will not have played very good competition in high school relative to his new SEC competition, I really really doubt it.

I also have to think he will improve his passing game y/o/y. In high school he could just chuck it around and our run and out physical everyone. Not in the SEC. He has the arm strength.
