Tide entering playoffs with underdog-like mentality
quote:

It was this time last year that Alabama resorted to using some made up or exaggerated quotes as an additional means to motivating its players.

There were four signs hanging on a wallinside a Crimson Tide meeting room, including one that was attributed to the "national media" that read, "Washington will BEAT ALABAMA because ALABAMA is overconfident."

No need for any made up or exaggerated quotes this year, though.

Alabama players are well aware of how close they came to not getting an opportunity to play in this year's College Football Playoff. And they know there are many in the college football world that believe this to be a flawed and vulnerable team because of those performances against Auburn and Mississippi State.

It's created somewhat of an underdog mentality that you wouldn't typically expect Alabama players to have, a feeling that they have a lot to prove to go along with a desire to show that this team is much better than it played versus Auburn and Mississippi State.

"I think for sure because people were counting us out that didn't want us in (the playoffs)," Tide star defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick said. "Some people just don't like us. It's true. But I think it definitely helped as motivation and fuel, especially if we do what we're supposed to do and get to where we want to be. I think it will help us a lot."

People inside the Alabama building will tell you that this team is even more focused and motivated than normal.

And leaders like Fitzpatrick have been determined to keep teammates locked in and to help the Tide avoid issues that the team feels proved costly during last year's playoff run.

"As soon as we found out (about getting into the playoffs), everybody was excited and we all talked to each other, said we have to get right, get everybody's minds right," Fitzpatrick said. "... So we just had to make sure everybody was doing the right things and that nobody was (deviating). That was really it. The leadership talked to one another and told each other to make sure everybody was doing what they were supposed to be doing."

Alabama returned to practice Friday. Monday afternoon's session is the final of three camp-like practices focused on fundamentals and getting players back into football shape.

On Tuesday, the No. 4 Tide will begin preparing for this playoff semifinal matchup with No. 1 Clemson. This chance for Alabama to prove that it's better and less flawed than what the Joey Galloways of the world seem to believe.

"We're thankful for the opportunity, and we're glad we got put in this position to play for another national championship," running back Damien Harris said. "We know we're going to face a great opponent, a team that's been playing really well this year. They're the No. 1 team in the country right now. We know we have a big task at hand, but we're just preparing the best way we can. We know that if we play our best football, we're a tough team to beat, so that's what we're looking to do."

How is Boise? Seems like Idaho would be a sweet place to live.

So I wonder if we've heard anything on Hurts progressing in practice, and if the gameplan is what the players are happy with?

I firmly believe Bama can run the ball if they just let Harris do his thing and STICK WITH IT. Hit passes after establishing run game

Sweet indeed. Was worried about cold and food. Food is great, and cold isn’t that bad without humidity. The city itself is beyond great.

I don't think folks are worried that the team isn't in a good mental shape prior to a big game with a shite ton of time off. With Saban our teams are generally good mentally.

I am more worried about coaching and offensive efficiency than anything. Both of these things have let us down significantly the past two years.

So dead silence in Tua and “a lot of RPO” tells me they’re all in on Hurts and have chosen to reform our offense scheme rather than play another qb. So be it.

It’s jalens to win or lose. Let’s pray he can pull it off. While he’s not the long term best answer, I’ll take a national title today over prospects for tomorrow. And if that means two more years of Hurts and losing Tua, so be it.

If Jalen wins this thing, he’s our QB until he leaves, which means Tua transfers. No way you ever unseat a national championship winning qb. But it’s all worth it if we win a title. Titles are what it’s all about. And that will reinvigorate our recruiting and put us in a good position for the future.

I don’t believe in Hurts as a qb against the best competition. But I’m willing to give credit where credit is due... if he finds a way to pull it off.

Just want to remind you that, that while it’s good we lucked out and made the playoffs, the last time we actually played we got our asses kicked. By Auburn no less.

So no, I’m not filled with confidence about our QB.

We know, we know. You haven’t wasted a single opportunity to tell us all about what you think about Jalen as a QB. Do you think if you raise enough hell on this board that Nick is going to make a change because you think Tua should start? Please stop. No one likes to see you post your “I’m no sunshine pumper, I tell it like it is.” posts anymore. We know you want Tua to start and play all meaningful snaps the rest of they year. Spare the rest of us, please. I suggest you put it into a box and store it up until after the playoffs. You’re making every thread miserable.

Why do we never bring up the other bad aspects of that game?

Twice our center screwed up the snap. JW made a stupid clip block to put us back 15 yards. We botched a field goal snap. Ridley dropped a 3rd down conversion and slipped out of his break on another in the 4th quarter. We couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down and made Ryan Davis look like Antonio Brown. We can’t field punts. We’re struggling to create turnovers lately. Our best back gets 7 touches a game. Our receivers are good for a couple drops a game. We’ve got problems everywhere.
