It's kind of a catch 22. Clemson can get pressure with 4 and cover with everyone else. Tua comes in but really doesn't have experience with this type of pressure situation, so that isn't good. Also, Hurts has some limitations with reading defenses, especially when they can drop that many into coverage. The OLine needs to perform

We better learn to call screens...and learn it fast. We will have to keep that D line off balanced. If they are able to pin their ears back..we are in trouble, and it wouldn't matter if we had Tom Brady back their

If the LB's are shadowing hurts like Aub did, those screens won't work. They are sitting there waiting.

Saban is basically saying if we start to see Hurts go full Auburn then we will have a plan for the other guy. I like it.

So many other coaches fail to have a plan for the back up. Look at LSU in 2011. NCG

It can only help imo, if Hurts comes out scoring on every drive then let him go, but if we stall on multiply drives in a row then go with the Tua.

Alabama practice report: 2 new team members suit up for the first time
al.com
quote:

Day 2 of Alabama's Sugar Bowl preparation came on a busy Saturday on the Alabama campus.

The second of two graduation ceremonies was finishing up next door in Coleman Coliseum as the Crimson Tide went through its second workout of December. Here's what we saw:

-- Two members of the incoming class got their first practice in Saturday. Junior college transfer defensive back Saivion Smith and freshman outside linebacker Jarez Parks were in helmets and shorts while the rest of the team was in full gear. Nick Saban on Friday explained the two would be able to practice once the fall semester was officially over. Neither can participate in the Sugar Bowl but they can practice with the team. Parks was a grayshirt from last year's recruiting class.

-- Smith, originally at LSU, was getting some extra instruction from staffers and former Alabama DBs Nick Perry and Javier Arenas. (See video of him and the DBs above).

-- Minkah Fitzpatrick was doing most of the drills with the defensive backs with a wrap on his injured hamstring. The All-American on Saturday said he did a lot of cardio during the awards circuit and actually dropped a little weight.

-- Jeremy Pruitt was again out as he finished up recruiting at Tennessee. He'll be back for the next practice.

-- LaBryan Ray was again on the exercise bike as he works back from his late-season injury. Saban previously said there's a chance the defensive end could be back by the time practice begins in New Orleans in the final week of December.

-- A total of 13 Alabama players graduated on Saturday.

-- Former Alabama offensive lineman Alfred McCullough popped in to say hello before practice began.

-- Alabama does not have practice Sunday. It hits the field again Monday afternoon.

Few things, Tua will play is all my source has said. Everything is me making opinions I.e throwing them off, and if Tua has success he will stay in. So for now I don’t know what it looks like, all I know is he will come in the game.

I’ll admit I’m shocked.

guess my point is, the only thing about Tua that could "throw Clemson off" is that he's a great passing QB, so if the coaches trust him enough to pass the ball with it all on the line, they probably trust him enough to take a majority of the snaps

I agree with this pretty much.

barring injury or a complete debacle, I do not see Tua playing meaningful snaps... have you people lost your minds? Does this seem like something Saban would do?

Auburn changed a lot. Maybe Saban doesn’t want a repeat of Clemson 2 and Auburn.

I guess you feel the “sane” thing would be to allow Jalen four more ineffective quarters against elite competition.

Has anyone watched Boise State this year? They have effectively used a 2 QB system and rotate often, sometimes several times a possession. One QB is more of a runner than the other, but they both pass and use the entire playbook.

That said, if Tua plays, I’d have to imagine it’s lined up at receiver as a diversion or holder on field goals. I’d be really surprised if he actually runs the offense.

Not unheard of. He replaced Jake Coker in the Ole Miss game two or three years ago. Didn't go well for them, but they have a better feel for Tua's abilities from his significant playing time this season. Not to say that I think they do that this year.

I remember early last year when I pointed out Jalen's passing deficiencies. People went ape poo.

I have.

But I just moved from up there to Prattville last month.

Cozart was a pretty good find for them after Rypien got his bell rung in the beginning of the season.

Surely, if Tua succeeds in "throwing them off" he would stay in the game. I mean, why wouldn't he?

I kind of agree with you, but I also know that Saban has always placed an emphasis on absolutely no turnovers.

I could see them having a set amount of plays that are suited to Tua's abilities, but relatively safe from giving it to the other team. Sort of a "If it's there take it, otherwise throw it away" situation. I can't imagine he wants a freshman out there trying to force something to happen.

Boz, are you hearing anything about DH34 injuring his ankle?

At some point you have to generate some offense. And if we don’t, we’ll take our zero turnovers and our asses home after losing to Clemson again.

Zero turnovers at all costs belongs in a bygone era of football. If your defense is giving up 30+ points and you are committing to zero turnovers at all costs, you are screwed from the get go,

I personally think, while Clemson Part 2 made Saban think, Auburn woke him up.

So now we’re waiting and hoping again that Hurts can execute. Fine and good. But if he can’t move the offense this time, it would be insane not to yank him.

I don't disagree. I would rather see 3 TD and 2 INT in a win than 1 TD and 0 INT in a loss, obviously.

I agree with you and I am convinced that sort of production would open up the running game and help the oline, which gets a bum rap imo.

Ha I just moved here in October. Congrats on getting out before the winter hit.

It's an odd situation that most people here hate, but it seems to work really well. I could see Jalen and Tua being smart and team oriented enough to do it successfully, but I also would not be the one to try it out during the playoffs.

Alabama practice report: Jeremy Pruitt back with Tide
quote:

After missing Alabama's two practices last week while tending to Tennessee responsibilities, Jeremy Pruitt is back with the Crimson Tide, as expected.

Coach Nick Saban had said on Friday that Pruitt was expected to be back in Tuscaloosa on Sunday. And Pruitt was in his normal place with Alabama's inside linebackers during the open portion of the Tide's practice on Monday.

Here are some other notes from the media viewing period:

-- Class of 2018 members Jarez Parks and Saivion Smith were again taking part in practice. Parks, whom recruiting services list as a defensive end, is working as an outside linebacker.

-- Three injured players -- defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, offensive lineman Brandon Kennedy and cornerback Nigel Knott -- rode stationary bikes and did conditioning work with assistant strength and conditioning coach Josh Chapman.

-- This will be the third and probably final "camp-like" practice for Alabama based on what Saban said Friday. Saban said he expected to begin game week-like prep for Clemson on Tuesday.
