UA Football Montage - written by Alex Leatherwood

We are a team black, white, brown (Alex Leatherwood)

Together, we are a family, we are brothers (Mac Jones)

We represent ourselves, our families (Emil Ekiyor)

our hometowns (Evan Neal)

our university (Slade Bolden)

and our country (Patrick Surtain II)

We stand on the shoulders of giants (Devonta Smith)

Our grandparents and parents (Thomas Fletcher)

Our ancestors, our heroes, Alabama alumni (Cam Latu)

And former players who have changed the world (Major Tennison)

Beginning on our historic campus, we speak as one (Mac Jones)

Acknowledging out history (Patrick Surtain III)

Honoring their legacy, and building a better, more just future (Joshua McMillon)

On the field we are relentless (Stephon Winn)

We are strong. We are conquerors. (Evan Neal)

We are human beings first. (Jaylen Waddle)

And at this moment in history, we can't be silent. We must speak up for our brothers and sisters. For our sons and daughters. (Nick Saban)

We speak, for justice, for fairness (Jarez Parks)

For equality, for greater understanding (Devonta Smith)

We stand together against racism (Mac Jones)

Against brutality (Emil Ekiyor)

Against violence (Patrick Surtain)

For a better world (DJ Dale)

When we see our families, our neighbors, our classmates, subjected to violence, we recognize the fear in their eyes (Ale Kaho)

When we experience racism, it hurts (Dylan Moses)

In the game, we are one team (Cam Latu)

One heartbeat, one mission (Nick Saban)

Yet, we are diverse (Stephon Winn)

We don't always agree (Jaylen Waddle)

We learn so much from each other (Jarez Parks)

We are so much better together (Thomas Fletcher)

Until I listen with an open heart and mind, I can't understand his experience and his pain (Nick Saban)

The violence has shown us how much we benefit from being together (Devonta Smith)

And much we need each other (Evan Neal)

We believe the solutions to our challenges are within us (Dylan Moses)

We choose to listen (Jarez Parks)

We choose to hear (Mac Jones)

And understand others perspectives (Evan NEal)

Let's listen (Mac Jones)

Let's unite (Emil Ekiyor)

Becaue all lives can't matter until black matter (Jaylen Waddle)

Until black lives matter (DJ Dale)

Until black lives matter (Ale Kaho)

Until black lives matter (Mac Jones)

Because all lives can't matter until black lives matter (Devonta Smith)

I believe it is supposed to convey that it is impossible to get to the point where all lives prove to matter if we don't first fix the problem that black lives "don't matter".

Not endorsing or rejecting that sentiment, just noting the reasoning behind it.

Gonna get downvoted all to hell, but BLM is an unapologetically Marxist organization serving as a fundraising arm of the DNC. I understand the sentiment, but the phrase and the organization are inseparable at this point. And the organization's mission statement includes, among other things:
quote:

We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege...When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).
I'm sure that would go over really well in the locker room.
quote:

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another,
So, hard pass.

By Marxist, if you are thinking Conflict Theory, then yes.

If you are using the term Marxist as a substitute for communism, no.

They're Marxist revolutionaries, however you want to parse it.
quote:

"If this country doesn't give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it," said Hawk Newsome, chairman of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, during an interview with Fox News. "I could be speaking figuratively, I could be speaking literally. It's a matter of interpretation."
They hate capitalism, but sure do love some marketing.

A well-penned letter and I appreciate their unifying message.

I'm sure this thread will go off the rails, and real, substantive discussion will get buried amongst bickering, but roll tide.

It isn't saying "we won't allow all lives to matter until black lives matter". It's saying, "it's an impossibility for ALL of anything to matter if a subset of that thing does't matter".

If you had a house with 6 rooms in it and you said I'm repainting all rooms, it would be impossible to have done so while also not repainting one of those room.

I know people are going to take it a certain type of way, but I honestly think its the best way to do this. It's peacefully expressing the sentiment of many. It's a hell of a lot better than some of these destructive protests I've seen. I'd rather people associated with the university do this than be out there vandalizing, assaulting, etc.

(also, reading the comments it looks like some are confusing the sentiment/belief that Black Lives do, in fact, matter, with the organization BLM. They are not the same thing)

AL.com - Backstory behind video

quote:

The idea came from a number of conversations in the past few weeks following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The football program held video calls with prominent Black voices including Condoleezza Rice, Charles Barkley and Stephen A. Smith and their message was clear: use your platform for positive change.

quote:

The leadership group of veteran players and other star players filmed their parts on Wednesday, and it was edited for release early Thursday afternoon.

The message was one of unity, honoring the past and building a better future for race relations. It calls for equality and the end of brutality and ended with a simple message repeated by several players and appeared on the screen.

For those that don't know, Alex Leatherwood is a great writer. He's even written an intro to a game on CBS or ESPN.

Anyway, great they chose to use his words. It didn't feel like a PR message. Felt genuine.
Great to see.

Well said. And if people can't separate the two, then that is on them.

I agree 100%. That's why we've been painting all six rooms for years now. Hence why I asked what the hell does any of this mean?

The media and our illustrious political overlords don't exactly help with that unfortunately. It really sucks that what should be a universally supported message has been co-opted by a bunch of extremist assholes.

Folks going to look back at this whole virtue signaling with great embarrassment. Ask all of those older Chinese about their feelings of "overthowing the patriarchy, etc." during the cultural revolution.
