For somebody with Avery’s credentials, his inability to draw up and have his players execute a simple inbound play was mind blowing. If a a close game went under a minute, we were screwed if they simply guarded the player inbounding the ball.
It truly is a testament to how talented those Mavs teams were that they won so many games under him. He just wasn't a NBA (or college) caliber tactician.

The statement alone doesn't necessarily make him a racist, but the fact that it came out of his mouth when talking a group of predominantly young black men is pretty alarming.
How is that alarming in any way?
Making a dumb statement in an unscripted moment and immediately apologizing for it is in no way alarming. It’s just a mistake.
People make white athlete jokes in this thread and on this board daily.

Yea I'm sure Alabama basketball syndrome will set in over the off-season and I'll start feeling queasy about things falling apart going forward....but....hard to watch Oats and our team play and think this is some sort of stars aligned moment.
We're gonna be some level of good most years going forward.

Just because it doesn't bother you, doesn't mean it didn't bother other people. I'm sure there were several people that were worried or disturbed by it whether it be parents or higher ups with the university. If it wasn't a big deal to somebody he wouldn't have apologized or been suspended. Plantation is just a really strange term to use accidentally or out of context. That's just my opinion, not expecting everyone to agree with me. I'm not trying to cancel the guy or get him fired over it.

It's not crazy to think we are going to be a perennial top 25 team, is it?

We're favored by 9 @ Georgia.
Ohio State -1.5 Illinois

I think that's why there is such intensity for defending his mistake, error in judgment, or whatever you want to name it; there will be plenty of people who will want to "cancel' him and call for his firing.
I think if the general opinion was to apologize and move forward you wouldn't hear much about it, but people are just tired of the constant mountain building out of what should be mole hills.

Top 25 AP poll or NET? I can see us being in that range in NET on a pretty regular basis with Oats because we're going to play way up on the efficiency metric most years, but consistently being in the AP top 25 is a bit more of a task. We will need to earn a reputation before that happens, and reputations take a while to build. Winning a couple (or more) of tournament games this year would go a long way with that.

I was thinking AP, but NET may be more important.
Either way, as long as we win games they can't deny us.

Agree. Instances like this, in my opinion, require someone to truly be sorry (which he seems to be) and then background investigation into what kind of person they truly are from those who know.
If you talk to 20 random ex players and they all tell you he's a good and fair guy then that's the end of it, IMHO.

Bothered or disturbed are a lot different than alarming or worrisome. I can understand and agree with being bothered by it. I think the comment did warrant an apology.
Saying it’s alarming implies it’s indicative of something bigger. As in tomorrow McDermott is gonna drop the n word or bench all of his minority players.
I don’t see that at all.

I mean, that's not really the same thing.
How so? I guess you can say because there’s no slavery association, but it’s not like if McDermott had said, “All you stupid Blacks need to stay together,” that would’ve been better. If anything, that would be worse in my book.
This tacit rule that it’s okay to openly and intentionally mock Whites or East Asians but a horrible offense to even accidentally offend other races is a cancer on our society. The underlying implication of the rule is significantly more racist against minorities than it is against Whites.

Just depends on how you define it I guess.

I'm not sure why this is such a sticking point. Has anyone ever actually been offended when someone said "white men can't jump"? That's not even remotely close to the mistake or Freudian slip or whatever you want to categorize it as that McDermott made. Slavery and civil rights are kind of big deal in the history of this country. It still is today. A white man in a position of power over minorities is going to catch heat when he uses a word like plantation. It's not hard to grasp or understand why. The guy likely just misspoke and is accepting his punishment.

To me, that's a totally different thing that doesn't really have anything to do with this situation and I certainly want no part of a discussion revolving around all of that and would prefer that it didn't happen in this thread.
Hopefully we can just get back to some basketball talk in here, please.

I know it's in Columbus but don't think OSU is beating Illinois.
