I didn't see the game live, but I caught a fair chunk of the replay this morning while working out.
I don't think I ever saw Alabama make a shot while I was casually watching. I saw a number of air-ball threes, and a lot of missed layups. (Granted, the layups where defended, but still.) Every time I focused on the game, either Alabama was missing a shot (and not getting a rebound) or Stanford was making a shot or a free throw.
Sometimes a team is just off. I hope that's what last night was.

This is one of the most shocking outcomes I've seen from nearly 6,000 games tracked.
Alabama lost by 18, but based on the shots both teams got, Alabama was supposed to win by 12!
LINK
This game was purely about shooting. We have opened cold these first two games and the shots aren't falling.
The shot selection in the 1st half was not bad, but they weren't falling and Stanford was hitting everything. Then we got frustrated and took some bad shots in the 2nd half trying to press our way back into the game.
And lots of folks are pointing to the rebounding, but that was as much about the shooting as it was the effort.
Case and point:
Team: Rebounds / Shooting / Missed Shots
Stanford: 47 / 31-60 (51.7%) / 29 misses
Bama: 31 / 24-67 (35.8%) / 43 misses
Sure, Stanford outrebounded us by 16 (+15 defensive, +1 offensive), but they also had 14 extra opportunities for defensive rebounds because we missed much more than them.
We forced more turnovers (22 - 15), had more steals (10-8), tied in blocks (5-5), and were similar in fouls (20-18) and offensive rebounds (7-8).

Let's take the shooting stats and translate them based on last season averages:
2019-20 Stanford: 52.1% from the 2pt and 37.3% from 3pt.
Last night:
45 2pt attempts: (EV = 46.89 pts).
15 3pt attempts: (EV = 16.79 pts).
That would be 63.68 pts from the floor based on last year's %'s. Add on 12 FTs and that's an EV = 75.68 pts.
They scored 82 (+6.32 pts over EV).
In 2019-20 Bama: 52.1% from the 2pt and 34.9% from 3pt.
Last night:
38 2pt attempts: (EV = 39.60 pts)
29 3pt attempts: (EV = 30.36 pts)
That would be 69.96 pts from the floor, add on 9 FTs and that's an EV = 78.96 pts
We scored 64 pts (-14.96 pts under EV).
We just had a piss-poor shooting night on the same night they had an exceptional shooting night.

Stanford is a good defensive team. That had a lot to do with our poor shooting. They were not going to give us open 3s. They forced us to dribble drive and we just dont do that very well at all. I noticed any time we got the ball near the paint they always had 2 people on the ball, but we could never get the ball to our open, unguarded man. Their coach was at UAB several years ago. UAB was pretty good then, and have gone straight down hill since he went to Stanford. He is a very good coach.

I think my biggest long term concern is that we had a piss poor shooting night because we never really seemed to get in an offensive flow, and never seemed to break Stanford down defensively. We did occasionally the first 10 minutes, but even then most of our buckets were off of drives to the basket and tough, contested shots. We had games last year where we missed a bunch of open looks and just had an unlucky shooting night (Jax State is a good example of this). Last night really didn't feel like that, even early on before we self-destructed.
Hopefully, it was just a combination of our guys trying to get comfortable and Stanford being a veteran, quality defense, and not bigger issues concerning our need for a violently quick point guard to beat his man off the dribble to get the offensive gears in motion.

I agree with most. Our offense is pure rim-run or kick-out, and we aren't producing well on either one of those.
Quinerly and Herb are our best at driving the lane, and it's no coincidence that our performance dropped off in the 1st half when they both came off the floor with 2 fouls early. It was a tight game until the 2 of them started having foul issues.
Petty isn't dribble-driver, and Shack/Rojas want to be, but more bad than good seems to happen when they do, and they should probably stand to do less of it.
Shack actually does a decent job on the dribble-drive, but he is too goal bound when he does it. He doesn't seem like he is looking for the kick-out and instead takes contested shots at the rim as the smallest man on the court. That's not good.
We really need Primo or Ellis to be that 3rd dribble-drive guy to get the kick-out 3s to Petty/Shack/Rojas/Reese (yes, Reese).

I know Oats doesn't like the midrange shot, but I think most of our guys would shoot a better percentage if they pulled up at 8 feet rather than driving all the way into trouble. We just don't have great finishers right now.

We Have to get Primo and Ellis going. If they can’t produce the we aren’t gonna be very good
This. We got literally nothing off the bench last night. Combine that with the fact that two starters, Herb and Bruner, can’t be relied on for major offensive production. If Primo and Ellis can’t provide points off the bench it’s going to be a long season. Q, Shack, and Petty would have to be lights out every night.

So who all is laying that -10 tonight?

-10? Are you fricking kidding me? Did Vegas watch that shitshow last night? I hope they are right and Nate lights a fire under some asses tonight but a double digit win? Not sure that's in the cards.

UNLV is awful. They lost to Montana State by 13 and Carolina last night by 27.

Bama Basketball Pick Record(1-1)
I actually like the -10 tonight due to UNLV’s complete lack of a post presence. They run a 4 guard lineup and we should be able to clean up second chance opportunities when our shots keep missing. I’m optimistic Oats can use last night’s game as locker room material and get the guys motivated for tonight.

Haase will be a frontrunner for the UNC job when Roy retires.

Agree and the problem is that Oats offensive system is heavily based on the ability of all positions to dribble drive and pass. JQ is about the only one right now that can do that.
I think we've figured out now just how good Kira was and how important he was to this offense.
My hope is that after figuring out the minutes and rotation, we will start to see better offensive flow.

I refuse to allow myself to watch. You all come and wake me up when we DON'T have an 8-2 preseason record; start off SEC play with a three game win streak that get's fans excited and hopeful, only to slowly fall off until the point where late in the season if we can just win 3 of 5 games we can be a solid bubble team only to drop 3 of those 5, including a bad loss, and limp into the SEC tourney where we will need to run the whole thing to get an automatic bid.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 18 years straight, shame on me.

On the bright side, UNLV is a better game for us than UNC. We were gonna be 1-1 anyways in this tournament.

Screw that, rather play tough competition. The more the better.
I see Texas destroyed IU, Shaka Smart appears to finally turn things around.

Hopefully tonight's game is a get right game vs a weak UNLV.
Gotta shoot much much better than 24% from the 3 line.
Can't be soft, getting out hustled by 16 on rebounds.
Jordan Bruner averaged over 9 rebounds a game last season.
He only has 7 combined rebounds vs JaxSt/Stanford.

You know what...Bill Walton is making me thankful we didn’t win yesterday.
Out of nowhere he ask the PBP guy if his dad was still alive.

Bill is a strange, hilarious commentator.
It could be a great game with his focus, thoughts, commentary drifting off to flying saucers or a past Grateful Dead concert.
