Just from reading the tea leaves it sounds like the money being thrown around this offseason has ticked up considerably from just the last few years. I can see a scenario where our basketball NIL scheme is designed to tick up with "inflation", but if they presume a year over year increase of 5-10% and one year it shoots up 25-30%, which is going to leave us totally fricked.
Have to assume this will end at some point. Are rich people really going to keep funding college sports to this level? Eventually they’ll get tired to throwing millions down the toilet you’d think.

The “small” rich will tap out but you underestimate how the “big” rich can piss away millions every year and it not even show up on their net worth

Larry Ellison could fund Michigan NIL for the next 50 years and it wouldn't make a dent in his fortune.

Allegedly Malone is parting ways with Mingo. I know we were recruiting him at one point. Would be a good get and seems like a solid fit. I think he could do really well in our scheme. Good replacement for Philon.

People really can comprehend how even hundred-millionaires essentially live in a completely different reality when it comes to money.
Hell, 5 million dollars is enough to produce ~200k/yr invested about as conservatively as possible. I don’t know about y’all but if I got 200k with no real work every year, it would change my whole relationship to work. I think I’d keep on working because of all the healthcare costs you can have as you get older and the family but I sure as hell would not be grinding anymore.

I have reached that point where I saw Alabama make a final four and I think im good. I always wanted to see it just once and it was a pretty bad arse ride.. Im not yelling at the clouds now, but im probably close to the end of my fandom. With football it died a long time ago for me, for some reason basketball was always the sport I wanted to see take off if only for a little while. Im pretty content to be honest... Think these next few years will be pretty gross though.
Not really from a win loss perspective, just year in and year out losing respect for 2/3's of the team you root for because they are off to the highest bidder. I would do it to if I had the opportunity, so im not mad at them, just not really what I want to get to invested in.

At this point, I’m just hoping college sports are only broken and not “dead.” The longer it goes on, the more it feels like the fix is further away and potentially not ever going to happen.
NFL and even NBA have a decent amount of parity and level playing fields, but college sports appear headed the way of MLB where the top 10ish money teams will dominate the championships with only an outlier thrown in there every blue moon. Need a level playing field for college sports.

So he is Javian’s brother
quote:
Mississippi State transfer Jamarion Davis-Fleming will take an official visit to Alabama tomorrow, per the @ThePortalReport.
Davis-Fleming was offered by Alabama out of high school but ultimately chose to sign with Mississippi State.
In his lone season in Starkville, he averaged 3.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 0.7 APG, and 1.3 BPG.
He grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against Alabama in late February.
Another interesting thing to note is that Davis-Fleming’s brother — Javian Davis played for Alabama during the 2019-20 season.
Davis-Fleming played both the 4 and 5 spots last season at Mississippi State. He is listed at 6-foot-10, 240 pounds and boasts a 7-foot-2 wingspan.

If Garrison and Davis-Fleming are TBB and Noah replacements great. Probably an upgrade. But if they're expected to be starter level replacements we are in trouble.

Both would allow you to become more athletic and physical. But neither are going to give you anything on the offensive end. Neither can stretch the defense at all. Will have to be paired with a stretch 4 who can play. Getting Freeman is very important.

Bama isn’t getting Freeman! It’s UK with a small chance of UConn

I'm sure there will be other bigs

According to Trilly Donovan, KY is offering the biggest bag, but it seems like the prospects of playing for Pope are lower. UConn is offering the least, but his camp likes Hurley. Evidently, they also like Oats.

You're assuming we don't have a tech bubble.

Garrison CAN hit 3s, but he really need more confidence in it. I think he could shoot 29% ish percent on decent volume, 2 or 3 a game. Which is enough to stretch the floor. Pope really didnt seem to give his guys any confidence in themselves. They all seemed to play kinda scared.

Pope just isn't that good of a coach. He's not a bad coach. He's just not a good coach. They'll spend their way to a tournament quality roster every year, but they'll only rarely be in the hunt for conference championships, much less national championships, with him. It'll be interesting to see how long of a leash he gets as a former player.

quote:I'm starting to think this is the biggest key to the system. A 4 who is a multi-level scorer and also does a bunch of dirty work (guard multiple positions, rebound at a high level, and help protect the rim). Our most efficient KenPom teams under Oats all had those guys: 1) #4, 2022-23 (Clowney/Gurley); 2) #6, 2024-25 (Nelson/Dioubate); 3) #9, 2020-21 (Herb Jones)
Will have to be paired with a stretch 4 who can play.
Note that during those years, the guys who spent the most time at the 5 were Bediako, Pringle, Omoruyi, Bruner, and Rojas. Not exactly a superstar list. The 5 spot just doesn't require an NBA prospect. Catch lobs, rebound, affect the rim.
