Giving KD an extension so soon without having any idea what his future performance was going to look like was stupid. I'm not on the "fire KD" train either but for all we know, he could go 6–6 this year and 6–6 again next year. Then what?
There was absolutely no reason to rush into an extension before seeing how things play out in years 3 and 4.

Maybe Byrne is letting this thing play out, and this is kind of our "contract year" in Fball and Bball. We do really well in both, lets say Final Fours, Elite 8s then this increases our bargaining power a ton.
Alabama has no choice to be patient and smart because we dont have a big donors. More than half of our fanbase isnt going to donate even a small amount either due to the mentality that college athletes get school, room and board paid for and that should be enough.
Its not an easy position for any AD to be in.

Maybe because if he would have bolted for Penn State or Michigan it would have been a huge black eye for our program and set our program back another 3-4 years at minimum?

I agree with you. That was a huge penny wise pound foolish move by LSU(and any team that does it).
But these rich old fricks are doing what rich old fricks do and doing whatever they can to enjoy the next 15 years and whatever comes next is someone else’s problem. They don’t give a damn about the bill coming due down the road.

The pitfalls of getting in bed with private equity are so well known I feel like I'm watching this anytime someone does it.

I think that money is probably just a token of appreciation, Shocco, or a bone tossed to fans to make them think Nick is still intimately involved in the program or maintains a sense of loyalty or dedication to it.

That’s why I have been saying for years here amid the yaps about the process and tradition and the Bama way and run the damn bawl Pawl and West Coast sissiness, and getting downvoted all to hell for a it and probably will again like I really care, that we are going to have a tough row to hoe moving forward in this new environment. Not insurmountable but very tough.
I can understand the people who only care about winning now advocating getting in bed with private equity or turning our uniforms into NASCAR uniforms or going crazy with the checkbook like Kiffin whether we can actually cover the checks or not or recruit a bunch of 25-year-olds like Indiana.
How far through the looking glass do you really want to go, though?

Debt makes slaves of people. LSU lack of money and desire to win drove them to do anything to be among the SEC elite again. Getting Kiffin is the closest thing to them getting Saban back and they were willing to do it. But all things considered with that entire culture, group, etc, it doesn't surprise me.

I mean.... $12MM over 10 years (a bit long tho) or $120MM isn't bad. Don't think Tennessee's look bad at all.
