BATON ROUGE – It will be a Top 10 matchup when LSU faces Clemson in the season-opener in less than four weeks as both teams sit inside the Top 10 of the AFCA Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Monday.

LSU is ranked No. 9 by the coaches, while Clemson is No. 6. The LSU-Clemson contest will mark the first time in school history the Tigers will open the season in a Top 10 matchup for a true road game. LSU’s other two Top 10 season-opening matchups came at neutral sites – 2011 No. 4 LSU vs. No. 3 Oregon (Arlington, Texas); 2023 No. 5 LSU vs. No. 8 Florida State (Orlando, Fla.).

The No. 9 ranking is the highest for the Tigers in the preseason coaches poll since 2023 when LSU opened the year ranked No. 5. Since 2000, LSU has entered a season ranked in the Top 10 of the coaches poll 12 times.

In addition to Clemson, five other teams on LSU’s 2025 schedule are ranked in the Top 25, a list topped by Alabama at No. 8 followed by South Carolina at No. 13, Ole Miss at No. 15, Florida at No. 17, and Texas A&M at No. 21. South Carolina, Florida and Texas A&M all come to Tiger Stadium this year.

The AFCA Coaches Poll features nine SEC teams with Texas leading the way at No. 1 followed by Georgia at No. 4. Tennessee at No. 18 rounds out the remaining SEC teams in Top 25.

Texas is always overrated ( the Dallas Cowboys of college football)
Notre Dame ( same see Texas)
Penn State - coach is a choker
Clemson or LSU (the loser is overrated) Hopefully Tigers win

Franklin isn't the best coach but the main problem is their QB position is always overrated. In the Big 10, you don't have to have the best QB around to win almost every single game. But when Penn State comes up against Ohio State or Michigan, that is when the offense in particular meets its Waterloo.

Texas would not be #1 if his name was Arch Boudreaux.

Love seeing the Ponies up there at 16. A few more years of NIL and they'll be pulling in SEC caliber talent.

These polls are a starting point as you have to start somewhere.....over the years LSU usually starts anywhere from 8 to 15. But by the end of the year the wins and losses settle it all....it is not where you start but where you end up.

Texas @ #1. Lolololololololol

Yeah, I get it they're talented but they have so much unproven right now. These polls are useless. They're going over money and reputation. Do not be shocked if a team like South Carolina ends up in the top 4 for SEC by the end of the season. Nobody is giving them or Florida any love there will surely be a team that sneaks up in the SEC.

Texas and Penn State too high, Clemson too low.

Can't speak about Texas but Penn State is too high...just like every preseason poll. And their QB Drew Allar? is so overrated it isn't even funny. He has never impressed me in the several games I have seen him in. H doesn't lose games to teams they should beat but he has trouble being a difference maker in the even or underdog games.

Why on God’s green Earth is Alabama ranked ahead of LSU?

I mean they lost to Vandy last year, had their worst team in over a decade and still beat LSU 42-13 at home. Why do you think we're entitled to be ranked above them? We have a better QB, that's all we know for sure. Everything else is up in the air.

You mentioned Vandy which beat Alabama and LSU beat handily. You didn't mention OU which beat Alabama handily and LSU beat handily. So yeah, Alabama blew out LSU but I just mentioned other opponents that went LSU's favor. The ONLY reason Alabama is being ranked above LSU is the name "Alabama". The most important position on the football field, QB, as of now has to be heavily, heavily in LSU's favor.

Since you like hyperbole, I will throw one back at you. Your statement is one of the most stupid statements I have ever read on the internet. Go play in the street!

It's not an advertisement so clicking on it is irrelevant. Preseason polls are useless.
