Re-read the quote. No part of the actual quote mentions “Confederate” or “Rebels” or anything else of that nature. Those words were interpolated into Lane’s quote by the Vanity Fair writer.

Vanity Fair interpolated that into what he said. No part of the text contained between “quote” symbols contained the words “Confederate” or “Rebels”.
That was all Vanity Fair’s interpretation, which should surprise nobody.
