Lane Kiffin Disputes Report That LSU Sparked NFL Players' Return To College

LSU coach Lane Kiffin pushed back Friday on the idea that the Tigers sparked the recent wave of former NFL players returning to college football.

A recent CBS Sports report said LSU reached out to players or their representatives about potentially challenging NCAA eligibility rules. Kiffin disputed the notion that LSU was behind the movement, saying the players made those decisions independently with their attorneys.

“These kids made these decisions on their own with attorneys,” Kiffin said during an appearance on SiriusXM College Sports Radio. “It’s all around the country.”

Kiffin pointed to similar legal cases in Texas, South Carolina and California, saying LSU has received more attention because of the high-profile players who have landed in Baton Rouge.

The Tigers have recently added former NFL players Zxavian Harris, Dae’Quan Wright and Junior Tuihalamaka amid the ongoing eligibility battle.

When the SEC came out with those huge fines and penalties that was a gift to these players. The courts will rule that as trying to force the will of the conference on the schools into colluding with them against the players.

Yeah, those proposed penalties were ridiculous and if this was the season of Halloween, obviously the equivalent of "BOO!". Those penalties alone would have been filed against in court as utterly ridiculous.

We’ve been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past 10 months now. Sucks for the class of 2022 but LSU needs to wash its hands. Such a waste of time and energy.

Why didn't the NCAA pass this rule in January instead of July? They dumped it on the 2022 players at the last minute complicating the issue. Now it will be decided by a judge. My money is on the players. I think the timing is going to kill the NCAA's chances. If had been passed in March or April, this would not be happening. Time for the NCAA to disappear. They do more harm than good. They should have listened to Saban 15 years ago.

Yeah, IF the 5 for 5 had been announced a month or so before any of the drafts...football, baseball, basketball, the players obviously would have no case at all. That was the most stupid timing I've ever seen by the NCAA. Did a player or two from the 2022 class run over some of their pets or something? The timing almost seems vindictive!

You don't speak for me or us. All coaches speak in half truths or no truth. 95% of LSU fans know what we are getting in Kiffin. Hopefully he stays a while & wins a lot of championships but most likely a few years & wins one or 2. Very few coaches stay anywhere too long anymore. We aren't naive tool.

And there’s an important Supreme Court precedent here: NCAA v. Alston.

The Supreme Court made clear that the NCAA isn’t entitled to some special antitrust exemption simply because it calls its product “college athletics.” The Court specifically rejected the argument that the unique nature of college sports places NCAA restraints outside ordinary antitrust law.

More recently, the federal courts have gone even further: eligibility rules themselves can constitute commercial restraints because they determine whether athletes can participate in the college sports labor market and earn NIL/other compensation.

I would suggest the college conferences get acquainted with the phrase "restraint of trade". I'm not a lawyer. Having said that, the ONLY reason the NFL draft can bind a player to the team that drafted him for YEARS is that they have an anti-trust exemption. The pro leagues still have to bargain with the players on certain issues but no way would some of their actions hold up in court without this special protection. College sports have none of that protection. Sankey can puff out his chest all he wants to but he is still subject to US law...and the fact that they ADMIT now that players are getting paid via NIL contracts only weakens their stances.

There seems to be 2 sides to this issue: 1.) The opinion of whether this is fair or not and 2.) The Law of whether this is legal or not.

I'm ready to see the final results, will they be able to play or not.

Why do some players get 7 years to play, but these guys (2022) only get 4? From now on, it will be 5 for 5. Good for them to sue the NCAA and SEC.

I'm generally against the pro players returning, but I think there should be some leway to the 2022 UFA that had no idea this ruling would be coming down to allow them another year of college. Not sure the process they should follow, but many of these players have only been paid a small amount and would have returned to college if they knew that was an option

Yep, 2020 and 2021 class got an automatic extra year due to COVID. Starting now, future classes can PLAY 5 seasons automatically if they want to. The 2022 class got screwed BIG TIME. They made draft decisions without complete information due to the NCAA's incompetent timing of the change in policy to enact 5 for 5. These "seniors" should have been grandfathered in to the 5 for 5. Simple solution to this mess is to make this a one time exemption.

Agree. This is a one-time scenario dating back to COVID. It should be a one and done in 2026 . Allowing players who chose to declare and didn't make the NFL cut to resume college eligibility would be an enduring shite show of major proportions.

Well, I believe Kiffin more than Todd Monken for example who one day said that Lane Kiffin had inquired about the Cleveland player...next day he walked it back and said he got bad information from one of his staff about that claim. LOL!
