ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit was on "The Ryen Russillo Show" this week and picked LSU as the best open job in the coaching carousel. Here's what he had to say. Per On3:
quote:

“I think LSU’s the best job,” Herbstreit explained. “I think it is because, you’re LSU, in the State of Louisiana ‚ you have competition, but nobody within the state. So, you’re recruiting in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, everywhere. Everyone who grows up in that state, they want to play for the purple and gold. They want to play at LSU. So you’ve got an embarrassment of riches in your own state. It’s great high school football.

“Then you can sprinkle in Miami, Florida and get into Alabama, whatever you have to do. But I think LSU, because there’s no competition for the recruits, and there’s big time support, I would lean towards LSU. Of the available jobs, I think LSU’s the best job.”

NIL needs a salary cap and that players can only transfer twice during their college career unless the coach gets fired!

So much for what Jordan Rogers thinks as well as Heather Dinich who said why would any coach want to go to LSU. And assuming we are competitive in NIL for our in state talent whoever comes here will get the players they want from Louisiana.

Where do people get this notion that Louisiana high schoolers want to play for LSU. It’s not true. The only time this was remotely accurate was when Nick was here. He built the fence around the state. Before that Louisiana blue chippers were making other schools champions mainly Miami, Fla state and so forth. Now with NIL these kids are chasing bags. They could give a shite where the bag is do I from

When the bags contain the same amount of money, an in state kid would probably choose LSU. No state has ever had a lock on every kid. They leave for various reasons. It’s to be expected we’ll lose some to other schools…as do they.

If it is the best job available, why do we have no head coach, no offensive coordinator, no atheletics director, and no university president?
user avatar

It was the best job until Landry single handedly pooped all over it.

Agreed….Landry has shown that he meddles in a big way.

Landry has drawn the ire of fans mostly because he is a Trump loving MAGA. I’m glad he called out Woodward on his massive buyouts. LSU in ‘80 & 99 went young & it’s time to go in that direction. The Tulane coach is obviously the right choice.

Unfortunately, you'll have to wait and see whether Landry's speech has any effect. The people claiming that it will can't say for certain.

LSU can and will mitigate and distinguish Landry's speech during the hiring process. Something the school has to deal with yes, but nothing that cannot be explained away.

That’s just not true anymore. Kids may want to go to LSU, but when Tennessee or someone showed up with an extra $500k, that’s where they are going.
user avatar
CableGuy2 months
And who can blame them? If another company offered you $500k more than you make with your current employer doing the exact same thing, you take the job 9/10 times.

Where most people have a problem is betraying your heritage and trading loyalty for an additional $500k when your already getting paid $3million. It feels like a slap in the face. Fkn mercenaries!

the color of choice now day is GREEN. That's what 90% see especially if their parents are poor and they are extremely talented. It's a way to make money. You can't blame them if they need money.

Which is why I can not ever understand why the LSU head coach wants so much money. Do they not know how much fun it is to be the Head Coach of the LSU Fightin' Tigers?

They should pay LSU for letting them have so much fun coaching young studs!!

Actually, if I had any clue what I was doing and could coach, I'd be quite happy to coach at LSU for a WHOLE lot less than even Arnsparger was paid back in the 80s. But - my expertise was playing trumpet in Tigerband so I probably wouldn't be a good choice for head coach.

Is it really the best job? History certainly hasn't bore that out. Yes, I get it, only big school in the state, no competition but if you look at the players it produces they are usually are WR's and DB's. I haven't looked but I'm sure if you look at the number of all american centers or tackles vs wideouts over the years I'd say it's probably not close. I keep hearing that's it's this greatest job ever but again, history doesn't suggest that.
