I'm all for de-militarizing PDs but not defunding them. Spend that money on training.

Just curious. What does de-militarizing the PD mean to you?

I assume he means eliminating SWAT and stop hiring ex-mil, hire underemployed millennial liberal arts majors instead.

You ain’t kiddin’. I grew up on the east side. I knew from my younger days there that Athens had no place for me as an adult.

There was a really interesting podcast on defending police this week on "the Daily."

Could be a boon for the football program if nothing else. Can't get arrested if there aren't any cops!

Those two have to be the most incompetent commissioners ever. I was bummed to have to move away, but not anymore. The entire county commission is being taken over by hipster retards.

I’m just afraid they’re going to get buy-in with how everyone is caving in to the pressure of becoming more “racially sensitive”. If they get this through, ACC is fricked.

It's awesome, all the protestors and rioters you see are a tiny number of people. The number one concern of citizens in less fortunate areas is...wait for it... More policing...

Defund the police is toxic, well except for the UGAPD, it will get republicans elected.

Absolutely right. And yes, the black population accounts for ~13% of our country and the majority of them aren’t buying into all this BS. It’s a very small minority of a very small minority, coupled with a tiny faction of hipster white kids that all these businesses and public authorities are cowering to. It’s nuts.

I'm not sure how any one poster on here can be as wrong as much as you are on so many things.

It's more so the large city PDs. My father was a police chief for two different medium/large cities. I don't feel they need to buy used equipment from the US military. I go with the theory that the more heavily armed they are the more likely they are to use it instead of trying to de-escalate the situation.

I kind of understand what you're saying but how often do they even deploy those armored vehicles? I also believe part of the military equipment they received is riot gear and thank God they've had that equipment the last 2 weeks.

That was 50 years ago, Andy Griffith Show times. You know this. Don't be obtuse. Also, is this your father saying this, or is this you saying this, and saying your dad was a high ranking cop therefore your opinion means more?

If the police didn't have to deal with homeless people, mentally ill people, drug addicts, drunks, etc., daily, they could better police the community and protect the citizens from crime. What the more rational protesters mean by "defunding" the police is to greatly strengthen community outreach programs to allow the police to be police instead of social workers. I have been discussing this with my radical leftist daughter, UGA class of '98, for a while.
