I was going to start a separate "Overreaction Sunday" post but here seems as good as any for now...

If I have any concerns about what we saw in the game (keep in mind this is already acknowledging that it's one game and likely an overreaction to a small sample size), it's this mentality continuing to pervade our offensive identity.

We already knew that we could more or less run at will on Vandy... The game was sufficiently in control. I'd have liked to see us at least take some more of the second and short plays and challenge Fromm to build some chemistry with these young receivers. Sure it's Vandy, and not a super high caliber defense, but it's better in game defensive talent than we're likely to see in the next two weeks and I'd like to see us try to get these receivers working hard on game situations before we end up playing a team that requires it... Not sure if that's Notre Dame but it's a decent enough guess...

There was a lot to be pleased about, but if I've got doubts it's more in the "how will we play with the lead" arena... 21-0 or 21-3 is not "call off the dogs territory" against any team with a pulse...

Also, more of a question...

Was Woerner late to a ton of blocks or were the ball carriers just outrunning their blockers? Felt like at least two or three very noticeable plays where I think it was Woerner looking to block but the RB/WR ended up having to go 1:1 against a defender with Woerner showing up a half second after the tackle.

Woerner didn’t have a great game. Good that you noticed that. I actually thought Eli Wolf performed better in a few counters that sprung Zeus. He seemed more fluid with his approach.

That's cute an everything, but for whatever it's worth I wouldn't trade Fromm for any QB in America aside from Trevor Lawrence, because Fromm is a really good college quarterback and perfect what what we try to do as an offense. Jesse Palmer on the telecast last night said that not since Peyton Manning had a college QB seen so much at the line of scrimmage pre-snap and changed into the right plays. That's obviously really strong!

However that doesn't mean that Fromm doesn't have holes in his game. Too many times he was seeing pressure that wasn't really there last night and stopping his progressions and not stepping into his throws. And like the other Dawg fan said, Fromm's footwork and pocket presence has actually gotten shittier since his freshman season. Fromm is too athletic to be such a statue in the pocket.

Agreed. We're not going to see anything interesting offensively until BTH against Notre Dame.

Smart:

Fromm “got a lot of looks, he got a lot of pressures, he got a lot of blitzes. He checked, as soon as he saw pressure to one side, he moved it. People don’t know what he did that was really really sound and put us in good football plays. Some of those explosive runs were because he knew where to put us.”

No sacks, no INTs.

The main concern, imo, are the defensive penalties that facilitated Vandy’s only points. That and the 2 fumbles. Otherwise, it was a good game for the first game of the season — a conference game — in someone else’s house.

Props to all our GA brethren who made the trip & took that stadium over. Recruits & potential recruits see our enthusiasm.

Y’all mother frickers need Jesus. Fromm had a deep pass called back due to a penalty, a pass to the end zone that probably should have been caught, and another pass to the goal line that one of our own players tipped that would have at least been a completion (if not a TD) to an open Pickens. The game was never in doubt and the plays were called like it. Sure, there was a little first-game rust but shut the frick with the chicken little shite, y’all.

Yep one of my non UGA fan friends texted me and asked me what I thought of our "impotent" win against Vandy....I'm like we covered the spread, the game was never in doubt, our first three drives were dominant and we kept it vanilla as shite on both sides of the ball which is smart.

Our offense has been described as "vanilla" since I joined the original DR in 2009. I think it's time for new adjectives.

You must know alot more about football than me, which isn't saying much. I thought the offense was doing all kinds of flavors, A-gap, off tackle, perimeter plays, screens, bombs, jet sweeps, slants, curls, TE plays, etc.

What other toppings would you have liked to see on your ice cream in the game?

I agree. Our opponents have plenty to worry about from the first game.
I did think the 2nd half play was not as good as the first half, but I think that was due to some defensive changes by Vandy at halftime. My biggest concern is the defensive penalties. Some guys looked very sloppy. The next two games will be interesting to watch to see if corrections are made.

Well for example we do run RPO occasionally and there wasn’t one handoff last night that Fromm pulled back and threw or ran himself.

Our fake half back toss has also netted some big plays the past couple of years and it wasn’t used once.

Edit: also Mason was determined not to get beat often as he kept at least one (usually both) safety back in a deep shell even on downs where we advertised run plays.

LIES! They were stunting the LBs on blitzes all damn game and playing deep safeties regularly. Fromm made the safe reads. You don’t step into a blitz or a stunt. That’s how you get murdered. His back foot throws were shorter throws to the open man taking advantage of the blitzes and stunts. That buys you valuable time and allows your guy to get into a lane where you can pass the ball. When he made those “back foot throws”, they were accurate as frick and went for good yardage. Give Vandy credit for making good tackles on a lot of those, but they were mostly good yardage.

I saw the same thing and chalked it up to receivers/backs not being patient enough to wait on the blocks. It's hard to wait on slower people when it is really the smart thing to do. Sometimes it happens that way....the players have to wait on the blocks and follow them because big linemen are going to be slower.
