For those who don't inhabit the Coaching Changes board:

quote:

Changes are expected on Kirby Smart's offensive staff as well. Keep an eye on former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

From today's Get the Picture:

quote:

Schlabach is fairly well connected in Athens, so take it for what it’s worth. (I might also mention this isn’t the first time I’ve heard Monken’s name mentioned, so take that for what it’s worth, too.)

SI summary on Monken:

quote:

Monken is not a traditional “Air Raid” coach, at least not in the sense most think when they hear that phrase. If you watch his offense at Oklahoma State or Southern Miss it bears almost no resemblance to what you’ll see from Mike Leach and his disciples.

Monken runs more of a spread offense that is built around throwing the football, but his offense is more balanced. While his offenses always lean heavy on the pass, the ability to be effective running and throwing the football is what makes them so explosive. The threat of the run also makes his pass offense more dynamic.

What I like most about Monken’s offense is that he will attack the entire field with the throwing game. His Oklahoma State offense attacked down the field quite a bit, but on every snap you had to be prepared to defend every zone, short to deep, inside and outside. Monken will attack with vertical stretch concepts, horizontal stretch concepts and he’ll run some triangle concepts that are a big part of the West Coast offense.

Monken also attacks with the play-action and screen game. His screen game attacks inside and outside, and will go to backs and receivers. He’ll get his running backs the football many ways. In 2011-12 his top back was Joseph Randle, who caught 71 passes in two seasons under Monken. In 2015 at Southern Miss, his top two backs combined for 79 caches and 799 yards.

ETA - Corrected first name of target

The more I read about him, the more I like it. The Senator is pretty clued in, and Schlabach's connected too, (to say the least). If GTP has heard murmurs of Monken's name lately, then the ESPN news is likely confirmation.

It’s possible we were waiting for the NC game to also interview Mickey Joseph or DJ Mangas before we pull the trigger on anyone.

Sounds like his offense is pretty close to what we did or at least tried to do this year.

I'm sure the only we get Monken is if he is given play-calling duties. As it stands right now, Coley is our play-caller. The question is is Kirby going to fire or demote coley??

he's not going to contribute to recruiting but the kids might like his NFL experience. I dunno, guess he's better than Coley though?

Somewhat separate discussion, but one thing I noticed in our game vs LSU and in the game last night is how little LSU rotates their offensive skill players offensively. IMO, this tendency alone makes them far less predictable in their offensive attack relative to UGA because you can't tie tendency to offensive personnel groupings. They can also be more flexible in mixing up their tempo and get in more of a rhythm generally.

I understand we had some youth that would make that more difficult this past season, but subbing in the blocking specialist WRs on running downs should be generally phased out imo. It seemed like Pickens stayed out there pretty much the whole time vs Baylor (whether due to development or necessity or both), and the results seemed generally positive for the offense as a whole.

He's got college experience. He was OC at Oklahoma State in early 2010s

Your title confused me a bit. Looked up Jeff Monken and found the Army HC.

This would be a homerun. Let's see if Smart wants a great coach or great recruiter because Coley is completely outclassed by Monken as a coach.
