Let's work in the framework that you are a good but not elite program. You aren't going to hire one of the known commodities and are going to be choosing between various levels of unknowns (high level coordinators, mid major coaches, rebound college/NFL coach).

If you are putting together the white board to sketch out the characteristics of your ideal candidate, what are they?

Recruiting? P5 experience? Offensive background? Have a system? Organization? Reputation in coaching community? Ability to develop QB?

What would you ideal candidate look like?

Hiring former NFL coaches doesn’t seem to work for anyone anymore. I saw Auburn was interested in hiring Quinn and I’m not worried about a guy like him because more often than not they either suck at recruiting, hate it, or both.

Someone who can put together an elite staff and delegate responsibilities accordingly, while holding people accountable. Seems like coaches who do this best have the biggest windfall when it comes to everything else associated with their program.

Yes.

I'd add that an ability to recruit elite OL, LBs, and DBs and use play calls that would prepare them for Sundays.

Definitely Kevin Steele. He checks all those boxes.

1 Should have experience working in highly successful P5 programs.

2. Can be a coordinator or even occasionally a position coach if he really knows his X's and O's.

3. Must know the existing recruiting lanes which means having a good relationship with high school coaches.

4. Be willing to open up new recruiting lanes

5. Have the personality that assistants want to stick around rather than take anything to get out.

6. Must be really familiar with current pop culture to relate to what the current young people are interested in.

7. Needs to be a good speaker and "schmoozer" when dealing with the boosters.

8. Have a definitive offensive and defensive philosophy.

9. Understand the high importance of getting the best QB you can and never stop recruiting that position hard.

10. Be willing to work the transfer portal and have a dedicated crew looking for players to poach.

11. Don't be afraid to use JUCO's to fill spots.

In today's era I'd want a dynamic offensive guy that's a known recruiter. Defense, experience, reputation, etc would take a backseat

I think expectations are impossible to live up to in this sport. People think their new coach should have a magic wand that instantly repairs systemic problems. They want it as cheap as possible and every time the guy loses, people will question his pay. They want a guy young enough to relate to the kids, but experienced enough to win immediately without the learning curve faced by young coaches.

I would want a proven track-record of winning the right way. I would want a person whose personal life is virtually unmarred. And I would want a guy who has a good list of people willing to come with him who are highly regarded in their area of expertise.

Defensive minded
A name that would make it easy for me to nickname our defense
A horrible record as a Head Coach (that way we get full credit for how great he turns out)
Preferably old as hell
Already knows our defense

I'd take a long look at their binder.

No binder no hire.

Someone young, but not so young that his resumé is really thin. Like in his late 30s-mid 40s. Stable family situation. Background on offense with at least a couple of years as a playcaller at the P-5/NFL level, ideally having a track record of success with multiple QBs. Strong reputation as a recruiter. Relatively large network of contacts in the coaching community to be able to draw a quality staff from.

Cultural fit. (Bielema in the south? And Morris didn’t even bring his family)
Recruiting. (Petrino and Bielema hated it)
Reputation (Do other coaches and players respect him?)
Development of Players (Do most of the players get better and go on to the the league)

For one of our opponents? His first name would have to be Kevin.

A&M isn’t looking but we wanted a national title winning head coach who, had experience building and maintaining a national power. The list was short and Jimbo was cheaper than Saban & Dabo.
