Meh. I'm as much of an A&M homer as the next Ag, but BCS isn't that great of a college town.
That said, I'm not listening to any noise from UT fan on the subject. Knoxville is a dump.

Used to be Starkville but no longer the case. Starkville isn’t a big town but it has a great college town feel. I prefer the Starkville, Athens, Tuscaloosa, Oxford, Fayetteville, Auburn type college towns. Places the town was built around the college, not a college in a big city. Other than Nashville which is awesome
Gainesville is pretty bad
Never been to Columbia, SC
Columbia MO is meh
College Station is god awful it looks like a Soviet bloc city
Baton Rouge is a lot of fun but it’s a crime infested shithole

Athens is a liberal cesspool.
They all are.
Starkville, Oxford, College Station, Auburn are all pretty conservative. Tuscaloosa too

Lubbock begs to differ. So does Waco.
Austin is San Francisco east.
Honestly Texas has terrible cities. They’re just bland as frick. Great for jobs but aesthetically and culturally terrible
Dallas and Houston are ok. I like San Antonio

quote:Knoxville has a great vibe if you're 18-22 but the city itself isn't very nice. Outlying areas like Farragut are nice but they're not part of any "college experience." The difference is that there aren't UT fans in here writing theses on how amazing Knoxville is, and how there's nothing more you could want in a college town.

There isn't anything comparable to the Strip and I didn't even know there was a downtown area until my third trip there
University Dr through the cotton district and into downtown has numerous bars, restaurants and shops. The town isn’t as big as Tuscaloosa so its not like the strip it’s a tad more spread out but fun

I've never been to College Station (though I'd love to get out there sometime) but if "about an hour's drive from a lake" is one of your selling points, well, uh, that kind of speaks for itself.

The reality is that BCS isn't that bad in its own right, it's just dull and without much character. It's in that middle zone between city and college town where it doesn't have the features of the former and doesn't have the charm of the latter.
Knoxville is better IMO. Knoxville is very dumpy in parts but it has some aesthetic attractiveness to the surrounding area and it feels much more like a college town (IMO) than some of the other reasonably sized cities. I don't like to go to Knoxville for games because the traffic is insane.
I think Lexington is the best real-city college town in the conference TBH.
For larger college "towns" - Athens followed by Tuscaloosa. Some charm, a lot to do, a little seedy and undesirable, though.
For quintessential college towns, Oxford and Auburn. Although Auburn is increasingly developed and losing some charm as a result IMO (I assume Oxford is too).

Lexington is nice, but as a Kentucky grad, it's not a college town. It's the 57th largest city in the country with almost 300,000 people.

So, like what was already said: in the middle of nowhere.

That is not the same place I went to school in the early 2000's. It blows my mind how much it's grown whenever I visit. Not a fan.

Hence putting in the real city category. But IMO it still doesn't feel particularly big and has a good UK-centric vibe for a medium city.

Unfortunately it's just not development that is going to age particularly well. It's not awful, but it's not good. Auburn (school) has never been great at cohesion when it comes to aesthetics, but the town is worse. I wish they were extremely strict with development standards for anything around the downtown area.

We checked out Starkville’s downtown and Cotton District recently during LSU weekend. Looked amazing.
Also ran into an Auburn grad at the game who’s kids were visiting campus. He said he loved Starkville, said it reminded him of Auburn used to be.
