The same states are always at the bottom, and they have a few things in common. If your state is 48 or 49, you don't really have much room for gloating anyway.

The bottom five states in the U.S. News & World Report ranking were:

Mississippi
New Mexico
Michigan
Louisiana was not only last overall, but also last for “crime and corrections.” It ranked second-to-last for economy and natural environment, as well.
Mississippi ranked last for health care and New Mexico was worst for education.

Outside of baton rouge, Louisiana is a cool place to travel to...different world, different people, amazing food and culture. Lay off.

Boycott buying products that are produced by the hundreds of refineries here and imports that come thru our ports.

Take NW Arkansas and a couple of productive towns out of the equation and I shudder to think of where Arkansas would be ranked.

Southwest Arkansas is still nice, it just doesn't have much opportunities for employment.

Take Southeast Arkansas out and Arkansas jumps 10 spots in the rankings.

Demographics. Collectively Louisiana is absolute shite. Much like MS. But if you can make your own personal situation away from the unwashed masses it can be a great place to be.

While I don't doubt either Dakota or Nebraska being on there ...I highly doubt Minnesota is a great place to live.

Arkansas is a state of extremes. You have the very wealthy of Northwest Arkansas to the extreme poverty of Southeast Arkansas.
None of them truly represent the average Arkansan that are working class with blue collar jobs. They work and make a decent living but the group in extreme poverty don't work and live off the taxpayer dime.
