Man if they hire Kevin Steele
Honestly it wouldn't surprise me. But, you know, I can't think of any homerun hire right now. I don't see any coaches that are that great out there (that will realistically leave their current jobs).
Call me crazy but I wouldn't cry if it were Steele. He has been very solid on D, has tons of experience both in CFB and the NFL. He knows the SEC well, as he has coached at Bama and LSU among others. I mean who else is there? Everyone says Bill Clark. OK, but he is unproven at the SEC level. Mario Cristobol? Meh. Gus beat him last year. And Cristobol has been nowhere as good at Oregon as Kelly was.
I suppose we could hire some up and coming OC/DC, but that's always a massive risk. A top tier coordinator could totally flop as HC, especially being in the pressure cooker of the SEC W.
Oh well, when in doubt there's always Muschamp I guess.

In college? I know he is y’all’s daddy but come on...

It's Dell McGee unfortunately

No sir. Dell still likes hanging out on Victory Drive in Columbus. Auburn would be to close to conceal.

A guy with exactly one game of HC experience as a college coach. This would be the biggest WTF decision in auburn athletics history

Jack Crain seems to think it's Cristobal.

Agreed. B Clark would be solid. Hat tip Gary Busey
I think Chadwell from Coastal Carolina is the guy!

Hugh Freeze would bring a lot of SEC and NCAA attention.

Interim - I get it.
HC? He will likely keep the entire staff. Makes no sense at all. Why would we fire Gus just to hire one of his own assistants?
Chad Morris-interim?

His Big12 conference winning percentage was .03125.
As in, he won 3.125% of his conference games.
As in, he won 1 Big12 game in 4 years. And lost the other 31.

Nope, not Yellow Wood. It was the Trustee who pushed for the $49M contract.

I was told (before the game last night)that worst case was having Steele coach one season while they found the right fit.
There was a lot of smoke leading up to this, and I’m sure there are several versions of the same story floating around.
FWIW, the word I got (also last week) jives with what you’re saying.
The only main difference is that I was told there was a coach already in amicable talks, but either it wasn’t known who specifically that was yet or they just didn’t want to tell me.
There was nothing mentioned at all about Steele coaching longer-term, other than for a bowl game.
Considering I was told this days ago, even if it’s not 100% accurate, I think it’s still very plausible for them to already have their coach in some form or fashion, based on some other things that have played out as discussed.
Who knows, this stuff is like recruiting — even good info can change for whatever reason, so I guess either of these scenarios could be true, or have been true at some point.

Saw this after I posted the response above.
We must be getting the same info. I was told the person you’re referring to felt responsible for the contract extension, and wanted to “make it right” through the buyout.

If they’ve made the hire it has to be an easy one. Why would they fire Malzahn right now to promote Steele? Recruiting class is already in the shatter. Freeze is still under employ so I would think they would wait until after Bowl season, and he’s not the impactful hire that some think he is. I’m thinking Meyer, and that’s a huge gamble that I don’t think will pay off. Guy’s 56 and has been out of football for 2 years and he’s a loose cannon. Auburn’s in a bad spot. Whatever gamble they make has to pay off. No option for failure.

Rumor has it that negotiations broke down due to some details the two parties couldn't agree on.
It was just one detail. But I can see why both sides didn't want to budge.

Who do you see us hiring?

There is hope by one of the Trustees that if Steele is given a year, he could convince the rest he is the best pick for the job.
Serious question. Which one is so close to Steele that they're willing to take that shot? Riggins? Rane? Lanier?
