But again, as noted earlier, if that is the idea then why not just keep Malzahn for another year? Unless you fear that he'll win just enough to start the whole cycle over

Exactly. It’s been said Steele is close to retiring and with Alabama state retirement pension too.

That makes the most sense. I guess my question would be, are they going to openly say that is the plan? The only other times I can think of that type of situation happening were in probation type scenarios (Grobe at Baylor as an example).

My money is seriously on Petrino being their guy. He knows people down there.

Yea - but that was also a special situation in that Petrino was fired in April for......non-football things

He (Willie) has enough ties to Auburn that he can find out anything he wants from somebody.................if not straight from the horses mouth.

Perhaps but why would he then rush to social
media just to say he knows ? What's the point, except
self attention to being one of those "well
placed insiders" that always emerge in coaching
changes.

The only people floating Freeze’s name are Freeze himself and Jimmy Sexton. He’s not a candidate.

to let the Auburn fanbase know that we have our guy?

ETA IF it's Steele, why slap the Interim tag on him? Just say he is the new HC and move on.

Would be interesting to see how it played in recruiting, as well.

The USCe game sealed his fate. In a COVID Season, the PTB could have accepted losses to UGA and Bama, but the writing on the wall came when Boom beat him. They made the decision after the IB, but that wasn't the contributing factor. There is hope by one of the Trustees that if Steele is given a year, he could convince the rest he is the best pick for the job. The rest want a big name, and now they are going thru the motions to see who they can get. This has been going on for a few weeks.

What’s the point in saying “I know who the coach is”? Unless you say more, you can always say “yeah, I knew it was going to be him that they hired” regardless of who they hire.

Fun to babble about, but the above is true. You can substitute other clown shows - Kiffen, Petrino - for Freeze. None are on the list, nor is Coach Steele. Thankfully, this search, mostly over the last fall, has been handled professionally and will be wrapped up pretty quickly. They wouldn’t have fired Malzahn without their guy agreed in principle.

You must be forgetting that he coached in Arkansas longer than he did Auburn. We know him pretty well. And no, it absolutely would not be unlike him to pull some bullshite behind the scenes to get people pissed off. He is shady as frick. I can't believe he seems to have you guys fooled.
