Rather watch SEC hockey than SEC baseball.

I got my undergraduate degree from the State Univ.of NY at Oswego right on the shores of Lake Ontario. We had a very good hockey club (later a team) and played some very good small school teams, winning more than we lost. We were a good club because we recruited back woods Canadians from across the lake. I started attending games and was able to watch from about 10 feet away and was delighted with the physically of play. At that time PE was required and hockey was an option so I signed up for the semester. They forgot to tell me being a good skater was a requirement so I got killed. The other players happily took turns checking me into the boards, showing that southerner what hockey was all about. It was a great experience that is so much different than watching it on TV.

Nobody plays hockey in the South. We're just now catching on to soccer.

I don't think the two are really comparable. The vast majority of high schools have at least 2 soccer teams, with some having as many as 6. There's only a handful of places that you can even play ice hockey in Alabama.

However, having a viable pathway to the pros in soccer in the south is a fairly new development for soccer.

Probably for the same reason that we don’t have any Ski Teams. However, several years
ago the GATORs played the dawgs in Ice Hockey here in JAX.

Fairly new? A tad over 2 decades ago my brother had a teammate go first round in the MLS draft, at 16.

Yes. Fairly new. 2 decades ago, MLS had only ~12 teams, six rounds of the draft, and two teams didn't even draft anyone in the last round. The league didn't start until 1996. No MLS clubs had academies, and the only "southern" clubs were in Tampa, Miami, and Dallas (Miami and Tampa folded after 2001). Some players were making as little as $12k/year. There wasn't an extensive 2nd division like there is today with USL.

If your friend was a Project 40 player, there were only about 10 of them per year.

UAH has a legitimate D1 hockey program

Legitimate as in it's a D1 program? Sure. But it's been hot garbage for 15 years now. Their league disbanded, the new league they initially applied for denied them and they wound up in a conference that includes two teams in Alaska (to be fair any conference would require extensive travel since NO other southern school has D1 program). Their last winning season was 2005-06 and since then the school has twice announced they would be disbanding the program because of financial concerns, only to bring it back after massive fundraising drives.

Brah! I'd like to think we'd move toward making rugby an NCAA sport first! Plenty of blood and no need for fake ice.

Yea, that was basically all I meant. Legitimate as in NCAA D1, not lower levels or club teams.

Arkansas has a decent team, but our AD isn't a clownshow.

But it’s still a club team, not a true NCAA team. The same is true for the hockey teams at most SEC schools. Is Arkansas’ hockey team even under the control of the Arkansas athletic department?
