It is terrible but it is not as bad as the morning sports radio shows in Arkansas.
They have one in the evening that avoids sports and talks about polling questions.

It literally seems like every caller is from Alabama. Every single one. Pretty unwatchable show and I have the same question as the OP

You can't be this loco....do you see the filler on ESPN, Stephen A. and all the trash shows that had on with real morons on the show. Paul is a very good interviewer, I do not care for the show since it went National, when it was local, it was very entertaining, Now I just tune into other local stations if at all. He does what the Network wants, covers all the teams.
But your own question of why, the answer comes easy. A Call-in/Talk Show is VERY CHEAP TO PRODUCE, and thus its all prophet. I bet Paul makes 1.5 million and Stephen A. 10-15 million. Its fill in, you can only show so many rerun games.

The callers all sound like they're calling from the trailer park.
I'm 100% sure that many of the Gumps on the SEC Rant are the internet version of the Finebaum Show, posting away from their trailers inside the trashy trailer park.

That is reason why Finebaum does not have any credibility. His claim to fame is gets coaches terminated. That within itself is reason enough not to care what he has to offer. He also never played the game.

That SEC podcast needs to replace Paul.

So it's a show that is supposed to be about discussing sports, but is actually focused on the "hilarious" antics of a tiny number of otherwise anonymous people who have adopted annoying, over-the-top personas to endlessly troll one another and say outrageous stuff that no one is meant to take seriously in order to satiate their pathological need for attention?
I can't imagine why people who post here would be interested.

The callers belong on the Jerry Springer show. It's actually good when it's him talking with some sort of reporter or analyst.
This. Finebaum is a pretty good analyst but he’s forever stuck in the sports equivalent of shock radio. The problem is people tune in to listen to those wacky arse callers. They will never experiment with anything different as long as that’s the case.

Yeah if they removed the call-in portion of the show and it was just Paul talking with analysts or interviewing players/coaches, it would be a decent show.

Because it's ESPN and the channel has largely been wasted.

The same obnoxious goofballs that call in.

Pawl needs a dynasty that he can jump onboard with and get everybody else pissed at. The Bama gig is done. The show is now without a schtick.

It's really not much different than the troll threads here.

I used to listen to it when I had an hour to kill on my commute home and he had just landed on Sirius radio. Maybe 2003-4 time frame through Cam and the bagman. I mean who could not get fired up listening to Tammy, Jim, Legend, or the other call ins that made that show so Jerry Springer. I will say Pawl can interview with the best of them and since his claim to fame has always been getting the Bama faithful riled up, he had plenty of material with Shula as the coach back then. Kinda took a hit with Saban coming to T-town though.
His best stuff was Fridays when Gene Stallings and Pat Dye called in together.

I had the same thought earlier today. Listened to hear talk of the Final Four… didn’t last 5 minutes.
That’s been my experience every time I try to tune in. It goes maybe 5 minutes and then I turn it. Long way from its heights in the early 2000’s. Thought maybe Twitter would kill the caller portion of the show because it would give people an outlet to spew bullshite, but nope.
Finebaum doesn’t exactly bring anything to the table himself either. All of his opinions are just calculated hot takes. He’s wrong as anyone else out there and knows nothing about the actual sport.

The show is serving the exact purpose ESPN wants it to serve. They have a specific target audience in mind, and if you don't like the show, it more than likely means you're not the target audience.
The show isn't appealing to people with a reasonable IQ, and those with a reasonable IQ who watch the show, do it to get a laugh at the shallow end of the gene pool.

It is slowly evolving towards Jerry Springer.
Maybe we will get the lesbians who refuse the wear clothes episode.

Finebaum exists so that Yankees can listen to rednecks holler at each other and thus verify their negative stereotypes about the South.

Haven't lived in Little Rock in 14 years, but I still remember some of the unbelievable stuff that came out of Randy Rainwater's chum hole. Randy is easily the most stupid human to ever host a radio show. His absence of intellect is only surpassed by his complete lack of command of the English language. The New England Patriots were a "Jogger-Nut" of a team.
And as rock-bottom STUPID as Randy is, his callers are exponentially more dumb.
