Why do USC and UK have men's soccer teams?

Serious question. No other teams in the SEC and it's not like soccer is big in those states.

I’ve often wondered why more schools don’t have a soccer team. I don’t watch soccer or like soccer but it’s a growing sport in the US. I think it’s the fourth most played sport amongst American youth. It’s kinda strange more schools don’t.

Usce makes sense they came from the acc which sponsors soccer. I imagine it’s not an expensive sport to fund. Which brings me to my next question, Texas doesnt have soccer? That is very surprising to me being a sec newb and massive school that takes directors cup seriously

Good for them, and they're in good company. So do Princeton, UVA, Cornell, Stanford, Georgetown, Harvard, Yale, Cal and UCLA.

IX reasons. USCs and Miss State have given up their men's cross country teams for the same reason.
In the opulent 80s, schools were ADDING women's sports about as fast as they could for Title IX. Guess as we've gotten so ridiculously opulent on football that it's no longer possible to maintain a balance by spending more on women.

SC's is indeed a carryover from the ACC tenure.
When we were independent, the team was still pretty successful, all things. Developed some legit USMNT players like Brad Guzan, Josh Wolff, and Clint Mathis.
But the program is in the doldrums right now. It had strong support when I was in undergrad, and I enjoyed going to games.

Inaccurate. SC had been out of the ACC almost a decade when we started varsity Men's soccer. We left the acc in 1971 and didn't start men's soccer until 1978.
The real question to ask here is why the REST of the SEC doesn't have men's soccer?
The answer is, Title IX...

Ah, good to know. I was, indeed, unaware of this.
Hate that Annan was retained. He's done nothing to build off of Berson's tenure, even though that had stagnated.

Can't speak for SC but it's a big sport in KY. Coached a club team in the 80's and there were enough travel teams in state to have a league and it's grown since then.
