This is not news. The Big 10 and SEC have created a new sports league that essentially destroys any programs left out of it. A 12 team playoff is not going to save em either.

Stanford is very seriously considering ending all of their sports programs because they are not interested in fooling with this NIL mess

Why?

They could just as easily go the D3 or Ivy League route, not give athletic scholarships, and still field teams at that level based on the people that get in through the regular admissions process.

The fans would still come out, they'd be highly competitive at that level, and whatever NIL deals the players got would be akin to a part time job at the local pizza place.

If we're lucky, ALL colleges will take this path. It will fix the entire NIL problem overnight.

Wouldn't surprise me. With Cal either who is the other being floated.
These are TRULY academic first institutions that never got involved in the facilities arms race, dropping any academic requirements and never developed the fanbase to sustain this climate. It would be a shame as Stanford has a proud athletics history.

College football needs to change, and I think it starts with scholarships. Either cut them from 85 to 70 (as a starting point) or get rid of them altogether.

Cutting scholarships is insane. If anything the number needs to be increased from the current 85 to 100, or limits dropped entirely. Quality depth is hard enough to achieve now as it is. Eliminating scholarships certainly wouldn't be beneficial to the student athletes, either.

A lot of people ripped Leach about NCAA being professionals etc. He was being sarcastic in a way to make a point. (Listened to him on a podcast several months before his statement.

I said on this site long ago that NIL would slowly destroy college sports and got downvoted . We are just getting started. There are womens sports etc where they are already losing sports for a program. But now there is a push by lawyers that want Big/Bigger NIL for them, too.

I guess Tennis is next (Women's and Men on equal footing,

ETA: My point in this is; The SEC already has a ton of non revenue sports which cost us a lot of money as is. Now every little sports women or men play need an NIL?

Miss State had won multiple Disc Golf Ncaa championships. Are they gonna get NIL? We would stop participating if that happened, trust me.

As I said a few years back, these athletes are getting free education and the best free food etc etc. How much are we spending on a non athlete to go to college? A fortune!

Not saying Stanford isn't elitist because it very much is, but Stanford also has a major right wing presence on its campus, probably one of the most "right wing" elite brand colleges there are, if we can accuse them of such things.

I must have missed it, or you are agreeing with me that they aren't really students? Just athletes?

Schools do not have to compete for NIL.

Allow the athletes to do that on their own.

If Stanford doesn't get an athlete because of an NIL bid, maybe it wasn't a Stanford athlete to begin with.

Not sure if you are saying that schools do not organize to use NIL or are you saying the schools should stay away from NIL and if the individual Athlete to get their owm NIL / endorsement .

Sounds good to the latter .

Nationally, 54% of the football players who entered the transfer portal last year did not find a new home.

The transfer portal has been a thing longer than the whole NIL deal and historically it seems I read or heard that the numbers are far greater when you consider guys who leave P5 schools and end up at another P5 school. I don't remember the exact numbers but it was much more than 54%.

When you think about kids that will never sniff the NFL and would have gained a degree from a P5 university and realize they threw it away because they were upset over playing time is sad. It's ridiculous that these kids don't have more of a handle on what is in their best interest for their future.

The best schools will have a legal way to organize.

But that isn't a requirement.
Any media agent can work out deals on his/her own for athletes where an endorsement or name, image, likeness helps both a business and an athlete.

Believe it or not, agents can work and earn their commissions. They don't need to be handfed clients.

Stanford also was one of the big schools that was embarrassed by the admissions scandal so I could see why they are rethinking athletics in general. Stanford is NOT a hotbed of liberalism. They are a cut-throat institution that is all about the capitalism as long as it benefits them. They will pay lip service to either side's ideal though.

Have you even looked at the recruiting rankings?

Bama isn’t recruiting any differently post NIL than they were before.

The issue is that NIL and the instant eligibility transfer portal is destroying the game and making it completely unenjoyable to follow.

NIL money doesn't come out of school budgets.
