I'm not talking about sure-fire stars tou knew would play long and fruitful careers in the NFL, I'm talking about guys that were a surprise to you.

I'm sure I'll think of others but for Auburn two come to mind... Darren Bates and Peyton Barber.

Bates was on the 2010 championship team as a soph. but his last year 2012 we were terrible and I didnt think he'd make it to the pros at all. He got drafted higher than I though he would and stuck around for a long time.

Barber was pretty good on a bad team 2015 and barely made 1000 yds that year and I dont even think he was drafted but he's another one that stuck around and had a solid NFL career.

We had a damn good year in 2002 with a stout defense. Chris Clemons was an olb for us that was solid but not really anything to write home about. He left early for the draft and that was the first case in my life that I really remember thinking "wtf? Is this guy serious?" He proceeded to go undrafted as expected. Then he ended up playing for 13 seasons and winning a super bowl.

Jonathan Jones for Auburn.

Also, Neiko Thorpe was a flat out awful CB, but he’s lasted in the NFL through special teams. Daren Bates is similar to that.

Bart Starr. No doubt. 10 TDs and 20 INTs in his college career, less than 2,000 yards total.

2 Super Bowl MVPs.

Michael Bennett is up there. Solid player at A&M but not outstabding. Went undrafted in 2009, and went on to start around the NFL for a decade, with multiple pro bowl seasons and a Super Bowl ring.

Can't believe he's going into his 11th year.

Jason Peters from Arkansas is a great answer. Houston Nutt must have thought he was the 3rd best tackle on the team. When he was easily one of the 3 best tackles in the world. Undrafted TE.

I think it was Kadron Boone iirc that caught like 10 passes in his career but got signed because of his ST play. He ended up playing a lot at WR in the NFL and made a decent career.

I'll add George Wilson for Arkansas. He was an undrafted WR who played 10 years in the NFL at Safety.

That's definitely the case for Alabama.

That was the first name to come to mind for me, too.

Terrell Davis was second.

Edit to add: I'm not old enough to have an opinion about Fran Tarkenton. But I cant imagine many fans had him pegged as the holding NFL records out of college.

I'd say Kevin Greene for AU, even though he was DPOY in '84, he seemed to always be an underdog...from walk-on to All-Pro
