quote:10 was cool, but that was only 7 SEC games. That worked well for teams who had OOC rivals close by (Georgia vs. Clemson/South Carolina/GT) but that also resulted in some games being rarely played (Georgia and Tennessee had only played 8 times between 1937 and 1992).
I'm sure that the old guys wish it was still 10.
I liked the 12 team conference although an argument could be made that Vandy should have been in the West and Auburn in the East.
We're there any SWC teams that rarely played each other the way Georgia and Tennessee did?

No, they left willfully because of Bear Bryant. No to Tulane as well

My though process-
10 conference games means only 2 OOC games, and at best you'd play a team in the other division once every 5 years, unless you wanted to preserve one cross-division game (DSOR and TSIO immediately come to mind) then it would be once every 10 years.
I know the G5/1AA games aren't fun to watch on TV, but those games are pretty critical for the long term health of the sport. Those games are usually early games and cheaper tickets so it is easy to take a family to. If you think your kids like watching you watch Georgia play @ Mississippi State at 8PM on a Saturday night, well, I got some bad news for ya. They'd rather be in Athens for Georgia boat racing East Carolina. It gives them something to actually talk about instead of "I watched brain rot on YouTube Saturday night while Mom and Dad watched a football game."
Of course there is the payday for a Sun Belt or SWAC team which doesn't just fund their football program, but their entire athletic department. An argument can be made that if those programs cannot survive without a paycheck game then they shouldn't exist at all, but that argument is what got us to where we're at now with non-rev sports at SEC schools being dropped.

Meh.
Why would all UGA fans say hell no though? It would free up OOC scheduling.

We don't want to give clout to them. We don't want them to have more money. We don't like them. We want to play them, absolutely. But we want to kick the shite out of them as they exist now, not give them the opportunity to have better facilities, more NIL, and recruit against us more, in the long term.
The same reason UF and USC would hate Clemson and FSU being admitted.
The same reason AnM melted over Longhorns entering.

They punked out and had their chance. Hell no!

If they were suddenly a member I wouldn't be mad, but I also see no point in it. And I grew up a Tech fan and like Tech just fine still.
But what's the argument? Facilities have charm but aren't great. Baseball is good. Hopefully football stays up for a while. But the future for Tech athletics just isn't that bright - they're the equivalent of a country facing a demographic cliff. You don't have enough people who care passing through these days. The grad school cash infusion that GT is riding is probably good for academics and sustaining the school generally - it probably also diminishes the need to pour effort into the "undergraduate/future donor" piece.

Which brings me to another point.
The SEC has the in state rivals already with Mississippi and Alabama. And now, for some reason, Texas. Including their other border rival, Oklahoma.
But UGA, USC, and UF don't get our in state rivals? We have to schedule OOC to keep those alive?
It's insulting, to be honest.

Entering the SEC could turn all of that around.

Eh....I wouldn't mind it, but ultimately, they're quitters, so frick em. Let em rot.

Tech pretty much lives off foreign students, and I doubt they lack for high quality domestic candidates both in undergraduate and graduate programs.
I could be wrong, but I don't think they've simply been unable to fill the coffers sufficiently - it seems like an intentional choice. In other words, I certainly think that the SEC could help them, but it would need to be a top down thing in addition to that to get the value from it.

It wouldn't bother me. AU and GT had a great rivalry at one time. I would rather see Tech than FSU.

My though process-
1- keep it Southeastern, geographically.
2- ensures the UGA-GT rivalry remains intact as football is changing into something completely different, with OOC games being something that only happens in the post season. This could also be said for bringing in FSU and/or Clemson.
3- Ideally, drop mizzou and add GT, CU, FSU.
18 teams in (2) 9-team divisions.
Each division plays 8 games in their own division, and 2 games cross division.
This brings our conference to 10 SEC games per year, more inventory and more money for future TV contracts. And every team can still schedule two warm-up games anywhere in the season that allows for it.
It preserves the current OOC historic rivalries for UGA, South Carolina, and Florida.
It makes geographic and cultural sense. With GT being the outlier, culturally. But I think you'd definitely see a bandwagon bump for several years with GT's entrance. Hell, all the AU and UF fans would be GT fans when their own team is down in the dumps, like now for instance.
I don't want this, I want 10 team conferences with everyone at 9 conference games but....
if we absolutely have to, HAVE TO do this, your proposal is one of the few that would keep me at a registerable interest in CFB.

Georgia as a state is sort of like the state of Alabama when it comes to college loyalty.
The default school to cheer for is UGA - all the rednecks, sidewalk alumni, etc. wear dawg attire. Purchased at a 7-11 or Walmart. Attending Ga Tech is a deliberate choice - usually because of the academics.
Same w/ U of Alabama (default) and Auburn (deliberate choice because of academics and atmosphere.) Attire purchased at AU bookstores because they have actually been on campus.
