In all seriousness. Folks are mad about this. It is a little shady how it was done. The guy hired to run the search committee cut the search short and hired himself. Dr. Boyce is certainly qualified, but this is not a good look for the state of Mississippi.

But former U.S. Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, one of Ole Miss’ most famous alumni, was encouraged.

“Plus I also love the fact that he appears to be a good ol' boy,” Lott said. “... I’ve heard good things about him all along. I hope he will be able to help with recruiting and in reaching out to faculty and alumni and students alike, some of whom have felt somewhat disenfranchised lately.”

Well there you go

It’s one of the most corrupt processes and results I’ve ever seen from a Mississippi bureaucracy, and that’s really saying something. Just incredible.

Complete BS. All Mississippians should be upset by this fake search. I encourage all Mississippians to sign the petition to have him removed.

As an Ole Miss alum, I'd appreciate a link to the story or at least some explanation. I'm out of the loop.

Also, Trent Lott is the man.

ETA:

I googled. Appears he was hired to meet with "influential individuals" to understand what they wanted in a new Chancellor and those individuals wanted him.

Seems like a bullshite way to get the job, but he's qualified and if he gets the donor money flowing into the academic side of the university, I'm fine with it.

LINK

Glenn Boyce is the former head of the IHL. He retired a few years back and the current head was his No. 2 and replaced him. He was paid to lead the search for the new chancellor at Ole Miss. A list of names was leaked and he was not on it. All of a sudden, the search was cut short and he is being named chancellor this morning. Big money guys seem happy. Rank and file alums aren't.

It's fishy at best. Corrupt at worst.

It’s weird, I work with a few ole miss grads and they seem to like the hire.

Then I get on twitter / the rant and all the ole miss fans hate it.

I know Glenn personally. My anger is not about him. He’s going to appoint GOB politicians in key positions to make sure that the GOBs maintain power and eventually hand the keys over to Chip Pickering. It’s a puppet hire.

The IHL publicly released their candidate list earlier this week so those candidates could publicly deny that they wanted the job and move on to Boyce.

In less than 5 years, Chip Pickering will be the chancellor at Ole Miss.

Having made one of the worse hires in SEC history (Leath), his problems started with how the hiring was done. In the old days Presidential Hires were done in the open, now they are done in secret. This makes it more difficult for stakeholders to accept the hire.

From the article:
Immediate reaction online was severe, criticizing the college board for selecting someone who was part of the search and, in some cases, someone who didn't have the same academic credentials as other reported finalists. Word of protests and petitions started almost immediately after news broke of Boyce's selection.

Do the Phi Kappa Tau's still play Chancellor Golf at Ole Miss?

I may send some USPS Flat Rate boxes full of driving range balls to their house.

The IHL needs to be done away with. Each University should be able to have their own board of regents and make their own hiring decisions. Boyce isn't qualified for this job at all.

The issue isn’t necessarily with Boyce. I think he could potentially turnout to be a great hire in the long run. Smart business man wth connections, and could be exactly what OM needs

The issue is the IHL process. Ignoring more qualified prospects and changing the hiring process to secretly back door one of their own. Bad optics

sigh,

this may be a good hire but like everyone else said, this good ole boy system needs to change. IHL is worse than crap. At least crap can be adjusted and used for fertilizer.

Mississippi is gonna be like Mexico before long. I'd recommend putting moats up around starkville and oxford.

Boyce did not submit a formal application that was placed before the Campus Search Advisory Committee, which included various student, faculty and alumni groups. The IHL board granted Boyce what’s known as a “back door” interview, meaning the board and other search consultants reached out to him privately and included him late in the search process.
