Reggie Brown
This.
Juniors hit on Reggie was the cause of the targeting penalty being added to college football.
I thought Reggie might have died with that hit or been paralyzed.

Today Rosegreen would have been ejected for that hit, but back then it was legal. Reggie was knocked out standing up by that hit.

This is clearly #1. When a College Football play wins an ESPY award for "best play" across all sports then you know it's a damn good hit.

I was at the game and I, along with others in my section thought he was dead. It was a legal hit at the time but was very brutal

It was. That hit was referenced in every discussion about the targeting penalty being added. It probably wouldn't have been a penalty if not for that hit.
Reggie Brown was knocked out on his feet. There's a reason why targeting was created, and that reason is nobody running college football wanted to see a hit like that in a football game ever again.

Carlo Cheatthom (AU) on Reggie Cobb (Tenn).
The video is old and it doesn't show a lot of the result, but if you notice the short moments where they show Cobb on the ground afterword, he has the "concussion" gator-arms.
Brett Favre, after he retired for the last time, was asked what the hardest hit he had ever taken was. He said it was Carlo Cheattom when playing AU, and he had never forgotten it.

This wasn't the hardest, but it was perhaps the coolest looking

That shows how pusillanimous and out of touch the people running football - college and pro - actually are. Those are the exact type of hits fans love and want more of.
