Tennessee shouldn't have to suffer because Miami overpaid.

Beck was #8 in QBR and Nico was #36

If I’m not mistaken beck also had the most dropped passes in D1 this past season which means the gap between beck and Nico could be larger than QBR gap indicates.

Come on man, at least read a few articles before trying to start a discussion on a subject. If you weren't a total retard you'd know he got fired.

Nico was still on the team until he missed the spring game, which told the staff he was gone. Nico had decided to hit the portal before they could cut him.

Yes.

They were right in the long term of setting the precedent that players can't renogotiate at every juncture. Had they given in, it may have sno balled on them.

If you are looking just at the 2025 season, its tough to say it was the right call. They would definbitely have been a better team with Nico at QB.

Would they? I'm not so sure...

Nico might be significantly more talented/higher ceiling than Joey Aguilar, but Aguilar has been significantly more productive, and just my guess, is more polished at this point in time.

I know it sounds funny because we're talking about college; and particularly as I'm an LSU fan, where we just put out a Heisman winner/NFL rookie of the year at QB and we have a probable 1st round pick this year.
But if you're going to be paying teams tens of millions of dollars a year, the focus is going to shift from potential to production. Especially if the team is like Tennessee, otherwise ready to make a playoff run. Hell, look at the Title game: Will Howard and Riley Leonard. 6th round picks in the NFL draft, but Howard was in his 5th year, and Leonard his 4th. These guys weren't prospects, they were finished with their development.

Nobody at Tennessee will care if Nico goes in the 1st a couple years from now, if Tennessee gets a deep playoff run.

Impossible to answer until the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Either way, Tennessee wasn't having him back, so he had to go. He was either leaving on his own accord or getting cut.

Tennessee is unlikely to have a strong season this year; they really missed the chance to invest in him. Meanwhile, Nico is poised to walk away with $800k after taxes from UCLA, and once he's drafted, he'll be able to earn even more. Unfortunately, Tennessee could face years of setbacks as a result.

I love how everyone thinks this action by Tennessee has stopped it from happening again

It didn’t or won’t stop it, but hopefully some of these kids will see that his move cost him about 800k in the end and will maybe think a little harder before demanding more money.

They were wrong to pay him that in the first place. Never forget that these same mouthy VAWLS talking about taking a stand and what not sued to gut the NCAA to get him in the first place. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of

Tennessee was definitely right in letting him go.

The way I see it, you have to look at QBs now on a scale from Nussmeier to Nico, Nussmeier being the top and Nico being the bottom.
*Yeah, I'm an LSU fan, but in this case I'm removing my loyalty from the equation. I'm not saying Nussmeier is the best QB, I'm saying he is the best QB situation for a college.

Nussmeier- 3 years ago, LSU started a transfer, Jayden Daniels, ahead of him. Daniels was efficient but largely unspectacular passing the ball; but he led LSU to Atlanta. He got hurt and Nussmeier came in and wowed the crowd, big arm, 300 yds passing in a half. Suddenly everyone's favorite portal transfer target.
Did NOT enter the portal, but instead Kelly made him a co-team leader, set lots of stuff up. He rode the bench again, and again did not bitch or transfer. Daniels btw then won the Heisman. Nussmeier then started last year and had a good year, could have been a good draft prospect, chose to return to LSU for senior year because his game could use some work, and he could have a bigger year with the team.

Nico- very highly recruited QB, coming into a known high-performance offense. Did not beat out Joe Milton, who had an arm but didn't run the offense as well as they wanted. Then took over the following year, and was very underwhelming- both for the Tennessee offense, and for such a highly rated recruit. Held out for more NIL money despite this, ultimately dropped because he had done zero to earn it.

You want the guy who understands the importance of development, you do not want the guy who demands money because someone said he can be good. You can ask for money once you prove you ARE good. Nico wasn't there yet.

Him threatening to sit out the playoff game showed us all who he is

Are the other players that threatened to sit out still on the team?

I can see why they got blown out if they were worried about money and not the game.
