Greenville Online
COLUMBIA — South Carolina's board of trustees approved a new annual $300 athletics auxiliary fee on June 20 for every undergraduate student starting in the 2025-26 school year.
This fee will be in addition to the cost of tickets for students, which is $172 a year ($86 per semester), also for every undergraduate student.
According to the news release, the fee is "designed to continue student access to athletics events/ticket lottery, address increased event/program operating costs, and enhance the student experience across multiple USC sporting venues."
Some of the enhancements include things like student games, support for health/safety staffing at athletic events and facility upgrades. It will not be used for the upcoming Williams-Brice Stadium renovations, NIL deals or coaching contracts.
Sure it's not going to be used for NIL - money is fungible...taxes the students to pay the athletes...article is a few weeks old, but haven't seen it discussed

So the students are gonna be paying the other students pretty directly. Interesting. I wonder what the kid who is working his way through college thinks about this when he is walking to class and watches a football player drive by in his Mercedes on the way to practice.
Sorry, but maybe I misread the article. Is this fee only if you purchase student tickets, or mandatory and the student tickets are optional?
I am assuming the student tickets are optional.

$300 a year is pennies compared to the full tuition costs. So, in my opinion it's not a huge deal. But it ultimately is taxing students to give that money to athletes. It's a bad look for "college sports" in general.

In other words, they likely played a bit of shell game. They will take preexisting funds that before were going to student games, health/safety staffing and facility upgrades and move those to to stadium renovations, NIL deals and coaching contracts.
That way we can technically claim this new fee isn't going to any of those.

Wait are they charging all students $300 additional and they only get access to maybe be allowed to buy tickets?

This pisses me off big time.
I have a daughter who is a soph at LSU. They aren't doing this YET........but why do I or my daughter have to pay so that some fool can get his Benz or new house or great clothes?
When we are struggling to get through and still have to take out loans??
This is total BS no matter how they spin it...........the other students are paying the athletes.

No shite. Im working myself to death to pay for my son's education in Tuscaloosa right now. These frickers can pay for their own G Wagon.
College athletics nowadays feels like a trip Disney World - it's all just an elaborate ruse to separate you from your money.

Money from the regular athletic budget would cover some of that but affect their ability to pay regular operating expenses. The new money will cover the regular operating expenses so they can free up funds. It's ultimately all part of their operating expenses. This is an obfuscation.

There's only one way to stop this gentlemen. We have the power but unfortunately too many lack the will

$300 is not pennies to less advantaged working students who are paying their own way.

Clemson is doing the EXACT same thing, and every SEC school will be doing in next year. Wait and see...

Seems hypocritical that a Gamecock fan was all up in arms over LSU exploring the possibility of selling jersey patches.

Congrats on your state starting a new shitty trend I guess. States like South Carolina and Louisiana should really consider consolidating some of their shittier colleges like SUNO and the citadel to make some extra cash. If you’re marginally literate you should start at a community college first.

"Revenue sharing" as it was sold is such a crock. Thing about revenue is that no one likes sharing it. That is, no school was ever going to share revenue that already had or were making. Instead, they're going to bump up prices for students, fans, etc. and start "streamlining" their athletic departments (layoffs).

Also, add sponsorships. Everyone is going to eventually have jersey patches (if the NCAA approves it), field logos, etc
Your band will be sponsored by someone. So will your student section.
