There is no way Fournette would not be in the top 5

Then why is Emmitt Smith anywhere near the top 5

Because he earned it. Smith is 8th all time in SEC rushing and accomplished the feat in only 3 seasons.

He had 50 fewer carries than Bo Jackson did. Let's not act like it was some kind of handicap not playing the fourth year.

Emmitt's college career was not that spectacular. Ingram's was better, Trent had a 2k year, Jeremy hill even only playing 2 years average more per carry.

I mean

Hell Tre Mason had a better final year than Emmitt and finished higher in the Heisman rankings

Imagine that. An Arkansas homer.

Or either you dont get out much and never seen another team.

I get that we are using total body of work here, but I think Emmitt in the top 5 is a pretty big stretch.

Okay. He's drawn many comparisons to Bo as well.

Career rushing yards...

quote:

1. Emmitt Smith - 3,928 yds
2. Darren McFadden - 4,590 yds
3. Shaun Alexander - 4,035 yds
4. Kevin Faulk - 4,557 yds
5. Carnell Williams - 3,832 yds

Why not Anthony Dixon? He rushed for more yards than Williams and Smith, and did it playing for some crappy Mississippi State teams. He had to do it all himself.

But anyway. I'm not trying to be a dick. Like another Tiger fan said, if you're talking body of work after career is done that's cool.

I guess I would have no option of saying LF in that case.

Your putting Fournette over Smith right now? wow

Not just yes, but hell yes. LF is a better college back than Smith. So is DMac while on the subject. But I would put DMac up there as just an all around better athlete. Smith is one of the greatest but it is shadowed by his HoF NFL career.

Herschel is clearly better, but the OP set the parameter of best running backs since 1989.

Fournette and Gurley are better than any RB on your list outside of Emmit Smith.

Not bagging on LF, but here are the current rushing defensive stats for those 5 teams.

Rushing defense ranking out of 128 teams:

Syracuse 58
Miss St 61
Auburn 99
So Car 112
Ea Mich 128

As a team, LSU ran for at least 266 yards against all of those teams. Doesn't it stand to reason that allowing 260+ rush yards in a game is going to give that team a beating in rush defense ranking? Maybe LSU is that good at running the ball.

Here are the numbers for those 5 teams less the rushing yardage by LSU and where that rush ypg would fall in the current rush defense rankings.

State 146.8 ypg (47)
Syracuse 141.2 ypg (39)
Auburn 163.4 ypg (62)
EMU 326 ypg last
USC 189.4 (96)

And here is the percentage of season total rushing yardage allowed that LSU accounts for in each teams total

State 20.5%
Syracuse 21.3%
Auburn 26.4%
EMU 13%
USC 22.9%

Hi do you judge someone like Trent Richardson who had ungodly highlight runs and great numbers but gets held out of discussion because he was one of the biggest NFL RB busts of all time?
