Fun thread. Steve Goodman (You Don't Have to Call Me Darlin) wrote City of New Orleans, though.

Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight is a Hell of a song. But I like the Oak Ridge Boys version quite a bit better.

It is and it ain't close LOL. Both are great but Everette's is the definitive version...and also by far the most commercially successful version. BOH is a fantastic band and their version is good but it is not as good as Everette's...not even close.

Levon Helm originally wrote and recorded the song, that’s the definitive version.

Marie Laveau by Bobby Bare has got to be in there somewhere. One of the best songs ever set in Louisiana.

“Down in Louisiana, where the black trees grow
Lives a voodoo lady named Marie Laveau
She got a black cat's tooth and a Mojo bone
And anyone who wouldn't leave her alone
She'd go... another man done gone”

I would have guessed that was a much older song.

Hurricane by Band of Heathens
(this is a great song if you haven’t heard it)

Leon Everette's is far better....

I'm going to have to disagree with this assessment. Everette' was good, but the Band of Heathen's is very well-done and has a soulful sound that captures the grit of the city and it's attitude.

"19. Louisiana 1927 - Aaron Neville"

... this song should be in the top 5... beautiful song. And Randy Newman wrote is and sang it first.
