Smart and Saban both recruited well day 1 in the SEC. Both are hard on their players,
They are and they also both know when to pull back and encourage, see Saban this year w/Bama. That's what makes them both great.

The guy was a head coach for seven years prior to the AU job. Are there similar stories of issues with his previous assistants and players? Was there a dramatic shift in his behavior simply due to moving from Boise to Auburn?

I support harsin. Im willing to eat my crow when it doesn't work out. Im willing to risk it for a hardass that changes the culture. Our boosters are a bunch of meddling cocksuckers

I truly hate Harsin and can’t wait until he is fired.
He has no ability to truly lead and he is a shitty coach on top of that - seems to live in a bubble and can’t relate to anyone. Kirby Smart has more personality than him.
I tend to believe pretty much all of this.
But here's the real question that I think Auburn fans have to wrestle with: do you trust Greene to hire the next guy? If not, then he needs to go at the same time or before.
But then, that begs the question: if you're firing the FB coach who allegedly had a hard time relating to black players, can you fire the black AD?
There is no easy solution to Auburn's problems.

Read an article earlier but can’t find it now that indicated Greene has lost authority at Auburn. They referred to it as a “shift in authority”, “much like when Malzahn was let go”. Apparently the rogue alumni-fans are calling the shots with a lame-duck president.

The decision on Harsin’s future is expected to come within days from university leadership, not athletic leadership, sources have told ESPN. When athletic director Allen Greene hired Harsin, the move was viewed as a win for the athletic department fending off board and booster influence. That power dynamic appears to have shifted, similar to what occurred with the firing of Gus Malzahn in December 2020, a decision sources said came from outside the athletic department. That power dynamic appears to have shifted. It was a similar case with the firing of Gus Malzahn in December of 2020, a decision that sources said came from outside the athletic department. “Auburn is always going through transition in leadership,” said an industry source familiar with the school’s inner-workings. “Therefore there’s no way to ever tell who is in control.” Another source told ESPN that Harsin grew frustrated after the season when trying to get contract numbers finalized for assistant coaches he wanted to hire and administration officials wouldn’t give him any answers on what he could pay or the structure of those deals. Harsin even requested to meet with the board of trustees to address the salary pool questions, but Gogue said that wouldn’t be a good idea, a source said.

When this happens, it rarely matters whether the coach is good or not.

I’d say about Harsin can do at this point is negotiate for as much of the buyout as he can leave with.

Not defending them, but every big athletic program has them. If Auburn didn't, Gus Malzahn would still be giving press conferences on why another year of signing no OTs is a good thing.
I don't know what the story is here. All I KNOW is that Bryan Harsin came in here, blew off the press, fans and apparently the money and then proceeded to turn in a losing season that followed a downward trajectory. He then turned in one of the worst recruiting classes in the conference, signed NO ONE on NSD, is searching for his 3rd offensive coordinator and second defensive coordinator in a year, is losing coaching staff and players left and right (including an Auburn legacy who nearly single-handedly was the reason for several wins this past season) and if nothing else, from player's accounts is a major league a-hole. Being an a-hole is fine if you can win. You can't win if you can't recruit or put together a coaching staff that can build relationships with regional coaches. Even if none of these rumors would have broken out, this guy was on a trajectory towards a quick three year washout no one would have batted an eye at.

From all indications, Greene was told his contract would not be renewed some time back and has applied for multiple jobs since then. He would not be involved in the hiring of the next football coach.
The General has been and will continue being the real power in the AD until the new president comes in and hires his own guy. The current president, who is retiring, will determine Harsin's fate.

While tRant is always at its off season finest when there is some silly shite going down at an SEC program, beyond that, I just don't give enough of a damn about Auburn to have a strong take on this.
I guess thanks for some content, Harsin.

He did pretty well at Boise St. for 6 years or so.

I had a conversation with a former LSU player in Jan 2008 who described Saban almost exactly how some of these players describe Harsin.
I have no dog in this fight, but it seems like Harsin is a victim of what we have all allowed 17-25 year olds to dictate.

So it’s not like Harsin has not been coaching for a while. But all of a sudden all the standard lines that typically are used to throw mud or get someone fired by someone with an agenda are coming out about him. Even though, nothing like this has ever been seen about him before.
Yeah, that passes the smell test.
