Any hard hit is targeting. Saw it numerous times this year when the refs are trying to protect a team. Not just SEC refs. Easiest way to change the course of a game

Worst rule in sports and has been since its inception

I can’t help but chuckle when I hear them talk about “forcible contact”. It frickin football! It’s ALL forcible contact! That’s the frickin point!!! Lol
I can't help but laugh when they say "targeting." You are supposed to target the ball carrier. How about "launch?" Are you not supposed to use force? Do they want defenders to run around standing straight up and just hope they bump into the guy with the ball and he falls down?
It is absurd and it is like removing punches to the face in boxing because it can cause a head injury.

There should definitely be a clause where the penalty is waived off if the offensive player also initiates contact with the crown of their helmet.
They've missed this crucial part since the inception of this mess.

So if you are a defensive player and an offensive player carrying the ball lowers their helmet first isn’t it just instinctive for the defensive player to lower their helmet

got called on LSU last night too.

The spirit of this rule was meant to prevent players from trying to cause obvious harm. For example:
This is fricking targeting.
This is not targeting:

This is fricking targeting.

This is not targeting:

Yes it is. Ejections need to be eliminated unless it is 100% obvious. And more reversals need to be applied due to the offensive player moving his head at the last second.

They are not addressing WR or RB lowering their heads.
The 2nd Georgia player ejected- I’m sorry, but I will go to my grave thinking that was a form tackle.
And the RB exposed the crown of his head. It’s a natural act of bracing for impact.

Both targeting fouls were just open field tackles. The lock their eyes on the wrs number and as that lowers the helmet lowers.
Targeting was put in place to stop headhunting. Neither of those plays were head hunting.

If they were really concerned about player safety they would use padded helmets. The padded helmet is used in practice but not games.

Honestly, get rid of the helmets entirely. Players will have more superficial injuries like cuts and may be some teeth gone, but concussions will almost disappear. If Rugby can do it, why not football?

Mark it off but ejection is terrible
Exactly. If a player intentionally spears another player with their helmet with the obvious intent of inflicting injury I think ejection should be considered but that doesn't happen very often.

They could fix the targeting fiasco but stating the player must be defenseless. A ball carrier lowering his head is not,
This is.

This is.

It's a terrible rule and has been since the very first time it was implemented. It has nothing at all to do with player safety. It was, and is, a corporate-style defense against potential litigation and a sop to public opinion (specifically the media) put out when the furor about concussions became the media's talking point of the day and nothing else. That's why they don't remove the ejection aspect, because they're afraid of lawsuits from former players and of talking heads accusing them of not being serious about player safety.
The true culprit in this is our fricked-up court system. Football is clearly a dangerous sport and anyone participating in it does so willingly at their own risk, but "I don't have walking-around sense and wasn't aware I could get hurt because the people in charge didn't come out and hold my hand and specifically enumerate the ways I might get hurt" is a legitimate winning strategy in lawsuits.

In the LSU Arky game, I was glad they actually waved off a targeting flag.
Except by the way the rule is written it was targeting. The player "launched" and contact was with the "head or neck area".

My favorite part is when the guy on offense lowers his head right before you hit him so you get a helmet to helmet smack.... that the offensive guy initiated
Posted on 10/20/24 at 9:46 am to SemperFiDawg
Yes, it’s being called with too much caution now. It’s almost impossible to not have head/crown contact in some instances. NFL calling it same way.

Yep. The bitch-arse commentators were trying to condemn Sage Ryan for targeting when his fricking shoulder pad hit helmet. These fricks are perpetuating this bullshite.
