It is much healthier for the entire sport overall as we see with tv ratings.
TV ratings are severely misleading I think. Live sports are pretty cheap to produce so it doesn't take a lot of audience to make it worthwhile. I don't think that fans are as engaged with games on TV as they were just 10 years ago. If you look at in game threads from this site this season it seems like posts are down and a lot of those posts are posters taking shots at one another and other teams and anything other than the last play. This wasn't so just a few years ago on this site in those threads. TVs are tuned in, very few people are actually paying attention - I would bet the youtube highlights and post game shows like SEC Final are more indicative of what the number of actual fans who care are watching on TV. TVs are tuned in because there is nothing else going on on TV at 1 on a saturday. All of those bars and restaurants and airport lounges have TVs that have to be tuned into something to provide the ambience and background noise expected...but very few patrons are actually paying attention. I can't imagine that Dr. Pepper and Liberty Insurance isn't fully aware of this.....it is almost unimaginable how their paying for those ads is doing much good. What it is doing is making the game unwatchable in person or on TV. I don't think it goes away but anyone who suggests the product is as good as it was 20 years ago simply does not remember or choosing to forget.
The allure of College Football used to be regional...the idea that a team from Georgia was better than one from Florida. That stopped being the case in the 1970s but it was maintained in the minds of fans through the 90s and even today to some extent. The reality now is the team with the highest payroll and a coach who can manage 20 year old millionaires the best is going to be the most successful THIS season. It is unlikely anything other than scoundrels will emerge in that environment. People who will make Lane Kiffin look like a saint and Jimbo Fisher a genius. It is naive to think some schools cheated and others did not in the past...they all did to some extent. What some also did was develop talent and coach teams with what they had....and had some success. That is not going to get the job done any longer. Its going to be whoever is silly enough to invest the most in what is, when all is said and done, a meaningless game completely detached from anything to do with a university, a state, a region or a fanbase, being managed by someone without any consideration for the future and whose only concern is how much money they can fleece out of supporters....and shown on TVs where almost no one is watching. CFB has been a facade for about 80 years....there was just enough hint of it having something to do with a school and a state or region to lend it some allure until a few years ago....that is no longer the case...it is all about money and while it has been since the 80s they no longer hide it. It is garbage, its only reason to exist is it is the only garbage available on TV. It props up networks which would have failed years ago.

This to a T.
Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Missouri, Tennessee and even South Carolina still have a shot at the playoffs.
It’s as exciting as I can ever remember. Parity is great for the sport and will have the title bouncing around places like Indiana
This is true for now but the cost is staggering in terms of actual money being spent. Right now programs are saying "Indiana did it, we can too" but they won't, At some point in time money is going to level off....because donors are going to realize their donations are now paying for 20 year old millionaires and a shyster coach who is incapable of managing their egos and developing them as players. There is already no association between the program and the university....that has dissappeared completely. It is only a matter of time before there is no restriction at all on eligibility....LSU and Texas Tech were merely on the cutting edge of that. There will be no requirement that players even know where the university is. It is only a matter of time that a gambling scandal rocks college football and when it does donors are not going to foot the bill any longer. There is too much money to prevent it, it is inevitable - the corruption is going to eventually run supporters off. Pro sports aren't real in the US. There are all manner of mechanics involved in impacting the outcome.....it is naive as frick to think this isn't driven by gambling interests. College sports are not immune from this and it is becoming clearer and clearer.

hat’s the reason I always preferred CFB over the NFL. Winning championships has now taken a backseat to getting paid. A lot of players only care about money now.
Same. From a player perspective it is great but from the fan perspective it is bad and going towards awful. I still watch Bama and look at scores, but I have much less interest in other games and less interest in actually going to games. The sport is biting the hand that feeds it.

Last year was the least CFB I've ever watched. This year I've watched even less.
I don't think I'm alone. This shite is getting gutted.

A lot of the games are close yet you say it’s glorified high school football? Where there is always one team that blows out everyone in route to a state title? Huh?
The level of play, execution, open field tackling, professional level of football is closer to high school than pro’s now.
Can’t really see how anyone can argue that

Well all the young players impacting the NFL immediately would seem to present a problem for your theory.
Rookies used to sit for 1 to 3 years before seeing an NFL field.
Now we literally have OL and QB rookies expected to produce as rookies.
They actually put rookie OL on the field these days and they do ok a lot of the time.
Maybe letting 23 year olds play in college actually improves the level of play. Maybe?

Maybe if that was my point. It wasn’t so I’ll explain.
No teams have real depth anymore. So 1, you cannot practice at the level of intensity that really good teams did. So iron isn’t sharpening iron anymore because you cannot risk injuries and because the “2nd string” cornerback who gets on the field 40% of the snaps and is a big contributor at the star position is now at another school bc he’s getting paid more.
The quality of play is seriously down across the board because there is 0 continuity and depth , which is what builds teams. You get better teams when they have multiple good players making each other better. You get better players and teams when a kid doesn’t bounce around 4 programs in 4 years. Your self indulgent theory that the sole aspect of 23 year old + players making the game better is solely based off having a super star QB. Which is totally not relevant to the entire landscape of college football quality of play going down. And for the record there’s no problem with having 23 year old+ players. That’s not what I’m talking about at all.

The sport sucks arse now. The entire quality is like watching glorified high school football
The expanded playoffs and expanded conferences with imbalanced schedules have killed regular season enthusiasm.
If the SEC is going to include this many schools I’d like to see them play a four team playoff and consider skipping the CFP.

This has been going on for 25 years. You’re about 20 years late in making a point.
Maybe when Matthew stafford was a freshman at Georgia in 2006 and the world was screaming about how freshman don’t start at QB for big programs. That was relevant but it’s not now. But thanks for this kidney stone of knowledge.

After Jan 4th it gets too hard. Midweek games in late January can’t really keep my interest either. The expanded playoffs suck.

Having older players improves performance. That seems obvious on its face.
Taking players off the bench at Bama and putting them on the field starting......improves the level of play.....obviously. I mean you just replaced a lower level player with a better one....who wasn't playing for anyone. This isn't rocket surgery.
Playing in games is better than not playing in games for a players actual development. Obviously.
Being able to find passed over gems at lower levels or at the G5 and have them transfer in to improve higher level programs helps elevate the play.....obviously.

Right and every coach across the board has said the level of play has gone drastically down. Anyone with eyes can see that
If you really think the Indiana team with 4 players taken in the first 3 rounds and never lost a game last season could play on the same field with Georgia 2021 or 2022 with 5 players taken in the first round alone or Alabama 2020 I don’t know what to tell you. You can make an argument for parity, making an argument for better overall play is laughable at best. The play quality is awful objectively.
You are obviously stoked bc ole miss is great with a great 24 year old QB. Congrats. I’m not mad about it. But to argue that this quality of football is better is just lying to what your eyes are watching. This shite sucks. The product on the field is garbage. I have no dog in this fight either. Florida hasn’t been relevant in 15 years. The product is just objectively awful. No matter what you want to tell yourself. The smartest coaches in the profession disagree with you.

The fans complaining the most are the annual top 3 programs of the past,ALA,GEO ,OH ST . Every year those were in the playoffs or BCS whatever. All bought players had more recourses pre NIL and stacked 5@4 stars on their rosters. They hate parity and competition. Now their coaches have to coach ,talent won’t win it for them anymore.

My opinion is that I would much rather have 10 teams that execute well and have several studs on the team than the exceedingly poor product we have today.
Well of course you would…as long as you’re one of the 10.
Not saying things aren’t fricked up now and need some guardrails and structure, but having more teams competitive can be healthy for the sport.
Posted on 11/2/26 at 10:53 am to FireDanMullen
Well you are conflating two things.
The very top teams are not as good as when they hoarded 4star players as backups.
But the teams that never could get 4 star players before now have several as starters so they are better than previously.
Im not sure what Indiana could do verses a championship team from 5 years ago. Probably lose a close game?
I mean Indiana was playing with a team of 23 to 25 year olds that all had multiple years starting in college football. Maybe they'd push around the 20 and 21 year old 5 stars from the past. Maybe not.
Im pretty sure that the 15th ranked teams of today would completely dog walk the 15th ranked team of 5 years ago.

Georgia 2026, currently ranked #2, would be a two touchdown underdog to Georgia 2022 or 2021, in my opinion.
The quality of the top teams has cratered. That may be for the best from a balance standpoint, but anyone with eyes can see it.

I’m not sure this is true. Player development suffers across the board with all the transfers.
