And a slightly above average SEC defense in Auburn shut their arse down. Kelly isn’t Urban Myer.

And Oregon's defense shut Cam down in that game.

What is your point?

Ehh, Auburn's run defense was good that year. It was their secondary that wasn't typical SEC championship caliber. Oregon had almost 400 yards passing against them.

That was a weird game though.

Mullen would be a great hire. He is hands down the second best in the SEC behind Saban, and it has been that way for a while.

If you hire Frost, you are essentially hoping he turns into Mullen. Why make that gamble when the program is already in disarray?

This ^

Not a fan of Mullen what so ever and he's not that great of a coach but why would the AD, who is his friend and previous AD, not want him (an established SEC Coach) over Frost?

Unless the AD knows Mullen isn't good enough for him to hire after he just fired the defending 2x East Championship Coach.

I would think one of the two would be the coach. My money is on Mullen. It will happen right after the Egg Bowl.

As a Mississippi State fan, I don't want to lose Dan. He just became the school's second winningest coach.

Some reasons 'why' I think Dan doesn't leave ..
1) He has 'total' control over the football program at State; not so much at UF 2) Has a good team this year, doesn't lose much to graduation and has a good class coming in 3) Lower expectations; he can have a bad year like '16 when he went 6-7 and fans don't demand his firing 4) He is making top 15 $$ 5) Most important - both he and his wife actually enjoy it where they are.

Mullen will not be the next Florida coach. It's the lazy prediction due to his history there and the fact that Stricklin is there, but I wish people would do more research.

He's stated privately to many that he hated it there.

When his DC left to become the DC at Florida, Mullen ridiculed the decision as "a lateral move."

When Striklin (current Fla AD, not "Strickland" as many on here keep spelling it) was the AD at MSU, he and Mullen didn't exactly get along well with each other, to put it mildly.

This hire would scare me more than frost or kelly.

Mullen is i believe the 2nd or 3rd best coach in the SEC right now.

6) Can he deal with the OBC running around his football office giving out advice?

Mullen meets all of my criteria for the UF position.

Oregon is also a smaller program, and not an elite school. He didn't have near the talent he would have at Florida on the line. Trenches win titles. He couldn't get them at Oregon like he can the SEC.

And Mrs Mullen has stated , in the past , how uncomfortable it was at UF because "lose 1 game and fans start sending threatening letters"

This was way before Coach Mac fabricated the death threats.

Merlins has never looked back to Florida. When he gazes at the horizon, it's always to the NE.

I would be fine with Kelly. Mullen im on the fence about and Frost I have no idea. Kelly doesnt scare me at all. Mullen is a solid coach who would probably do well, but State would go back to the dumpster so thats a plus. No idea about what Frost would bring to the table.

I love it how whenever a big job comes open fan bases think they're getting The Dan Mullen. pipe dreams

Florida better hope they get Kelly, otherwise they will have to get an up and coming type, which may work fine, but there is great risk. I don't know if Patterson at TCU would make the jump, or not. There just aren't many attainable candidates out there that could live up to that job.

Not sure why he would leave, especially since it doesn't appear he didn't care for Florida. It's not always about money for everyone. He has literally zero pressure at MSU, and wouldn't make much more at Florida. No brainer to stay put.

Kelly is considered the best available coach in CFB; Frost is considered the new hot commodity, and Mullen used to work for the Florida AD.

Looks like Thamel really went out on a limb there.
