quote:

If Kelly isn’t a fit, it’s safe to categorize the Florida job as a two-horse race. The two most obvious candidates are UCF’s Scott Frost and Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, both of whom can address the ineptitude on the offensive side of the ball Florida fans have endured the past seven seasons. After watching Will Muschamp and McElwain put Neanderthal offenses on the field, Stricklin needs a coach with a pedigree that can satisfy a fan base spoiled by Steve Spurrier’s Fun ‘N’ Gun and Urban Meyer’s spread innovation.

So why Mullen or Frost? The timing and the tenor of the hiring hint first at Frost, who is the perceived leader and most likely to get the job. With Nebraska poised to fire Mike Riley and make a run at Frost, Florida’s pre-Halloween jettisoning of McElwain portends that they want an edge in the market. (Along with wanting to capitalize on the stupidity of McElwain’s “death threats” comments.) This is the same strategy former Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley used in outfoxing Notre Dame to hire Urban Meyer during the 2004 season.

Frost, 42, projects as having an elite ceiling. He has taken UCF from winless the year before his arrival to a bowl in his first season (6-7) and has them on a trajectory (7-0) to go undefeated this year. UCF leads the nation in scoring offense (51.0 ppg) by nearly five points per game. (Fittingly, Meyer’s Ohio State team is No. 2 with 46.3 points per game).

Mullen is the target given the AD's move. No other explanation for his actions.

Kelly is unlikely given that the SEC has already said that they will "watch" whatever school that hires him very closely. Essentially, double secret probation just for hiring him.

Except that wouldn't make sense considering their relationship and the lack of pursuit from other schools.

The timing of the move, if significant, would point to a coach that isn't currently leading a team (Kelly/Stoops) or someone who will garner massive interest from other schools (Frost/Campbell)

I just can’t see UF hiring a coach who left his last college gig with a show cause (kelly)

Is Auburn hiring Tommy Tubervile from Ole Miss the last time a SEC school stole a coach from another SEC school? There's pretty much an unspoken agreement not to do that or it would have happened a lot more.

I dont think Kelly would be a slam dunk hire. He had marginal success at Oregon riding the wave of the HUNH which teams now are used to defending and the PAC 12 was not as good of a conference then.

You also have years of film of NFL defenses schooling his system. Give me a coach that isnt married to anything other than solid recruiting and defense.

Would the Florida fanbase be ok with another hire of an up and coming coach?

I think the fans will be yelling for a big, established name.

He went 76-7 at Oregon with two national title appearances

And lets not act like teams have all the sudden found ways to stop the HUNH.

Pretty sure Nutt was canned by Arky one day and hired by OM the next.

Mullen would be a great hire. He is hands down the second best in the SEC behind Saban, and it has been that way for a while.

If you hire Frost, you are essentially hoping he turns into Mullen. Why make that gamble when the program is already in disarray?

And a slightly above average SEC defense in Auburn shut their arse down. Kelly isn’t Urban Myer.

He took over an already solid Oregon program in a Pac 12 where USC was in Carrol hangover mode and led by Lane Kiffin. When Oregon faced good defenses, they got beat badly.
