Tittle stats (2 years as starter):

Passing: 80-172 (46.5%) for 1184 yards & 16 TDs
Rushing: 95 carries for 98 yards & 0 TDs

Total TDs - 16.
Total yards - 1282

Johnny Stats (2 years as starter):

Passing: 595-863 (68.9%) for 7830 yards passing & 63 TDs,
Rushing: 345 for 2169 yards rushing & 30 TDs.

Total TDs - 93
Total yards - 10,000

In short, anyone voting for Tittle over Johnny is a fricking moron.

Honest question, what am I missing? Just NFL career only?

You all but assuredly missed it when someone asked me why an Alabama fan would pick Tittle over Rutledge.

The answer was homerism is no way to make selections. The trouble with these is accounting for skill and competition in different eras. Moreover, it is always hard to seperate the college and pro stats. Should you reward a great player limited by surrounding talent and team offensive philosophy and scheme in college, but his talent was clear in the pros? Likewise, should you give extra credit to a player whose surrounding talent and scheme exaggerated his stats in college but his real talent level missed the mark in the pros?

It is tough. But, with Starr, I think it is the former. He was unfortunate enough to play for Alabama in THE worst decade of Crimson Tide football. It made the early 2000s look good. But, his success in the pros shows without a doubt that it wasn't a lack of leadership or ability on his part. That's hard to overlook. It may go against the spirit of the vote, but it is what it is.

Had it been Starr vs Tebow, it would have been the best example of each of the above scenarios. And, I'd go with Tebow. That may only make sense to me, but I have to apply some sort of rubric and at least try to be consistent.

Different eras, different talent, different schemes.

Tittle was two time 1st team All-SEC. And, his pro career truly separates him from "scramble and chuck it up in the vicinity of
Mike Evan's on a hope and a prayer" for a TD Johnny.

I still don’t get it. In his own era he wasn’t considered to be very good college qb. He was injured and benched and mediocre at best .He wasn’t even a full time starter and his stats were pedestrian at best. Whereas the other guy was the best qb of his specific 4 year era and recognized as such . A guy who won an SEC championship, had another top five finish, left as the all time leading SEC passer etc. Hodson was stellar. It took Wuerffel to break his records.

Not denigrating the great Starr who is an NFL legend aNd was a rock solid human being, but it’s just ludicrous.

Vince Lombardi didn't agree with your assessment, but what the hell would that guy know about it.

Vince Lombardi was so eager to draft Bart Starr he picked him in the 17th round.

Bart Starr threw TEN (count em) td's in 4 years. And 20 interceptions.
Bart Starr averaged 476 yards passing PER SEASON.
Bart Starr rushed for negative yards in college.

In the words of the Montgomery Advertiser "Starr was relegated to mop-up duty as a senior when the Crimson Tide was winless in 10 games".

quote:

In an exclusive interview with AL.com, Cherry Starr debunked the cover story used about why Starr's career at Alabama fizzled before his junior season, and why he struggled with back pain throughout his storied NFL career.

It has long been accepted that Starr hurt his back during a punting exercise at Alabama. That is false, says Cherry Starr, who was with him at the time and throughout his life. Cherry told AL.com the truth is that Bart's injury happened during a gruesome ritualistic paddling for initiation into the university's A-Club for varsity lettermen.

"He was hospitalized at one point in traction," Cherry said. "That was in the days when they were initiated into the A-Club, and they had severe beatings and paddling. From all the members of the A-Club, they lined up with a big paddle with holes drilled in it, and it actually injured his back."

Bart never disclosed the incident involving the lettermen's club, says Cherry, because he thought "it would make him look bad." In declining health following two strokes in 2014, Bart, 82, is no longer able to discuss the events of his career, but the trauma he experienced at Alabama and its aftereffects are things the couple lived through together and have shared throughout their lives.

There's always going to be debate between long decent career vs. incredible 1 season though.
Wuerffel also won a Heisman and a Natty so "long, decent career" isn't really fair to Wuerffel.

I think there could be a legitimate debate between the two but obviously in 2020 on an LSU-slanted board, Burrow is going to steamroll this whole competition.

But the real problem was that Wuerffel was somehow an 8 seed. He should've been, at worst, a 2.

No doubt. Wuerrfel being that low is absurd. He is consistently ranked at worse top 25 all time, yet somehow in the SEC didn't even crack the top 28.
