Why indeed?

Because apparently they've got a mutual aid agreementthat goes back at least 15 years. They send officers to help with special events in Oxford and Oxford sends officers to help Mobile with Mardi Gras.

Media making a big deal out of nothing

NOPD has one of the best mounted patrol horse units int he county and they’re extremely comfortable with crowd control. I’m sure that was the thinking from Oxford PD

I would spend a lot of money to watch that

Why should NOPD go help police the Ole Miss trash in Oxford?

It’s usually all officers on overtime which is paid for by the host university. There is a swearing in ceremony limited to the event.

NOPD would not lose money or manpower for the game, but the shortages at their department probably means they have overtime spots not filled in NO so they aren’t going to compound that by giving officers a choice to work out of state.

Go spend some time in the quarter during Mardi Gras and watch them go to work. It’s excellent people watching

Try telling a mounted officer they have no authority and see how that works out.

If he in fact does not have any authority then it sounds like this interaction would end in a pretty sizable out of court settlement

I’ve done that enough to be able to close my eyes & just imagine them in Oxford.

If he doesn’t have authority he won’t be there.

Pretty simple.

They would be granted authority for the time they were officially on the clock. This happens all the time.
