They have created a new equity group of current LSU donors. Totally not an existing equity group.
You could see this coming from a mile away.
As someone posted yesterday before more details came out…
The citizens of Louisiana should be irate that the governor and LSU president are able to sell publicly owned assets - future earnings - to private individuals without any real oversight or public input.

If this comes to pass it will likely be a group of current LSU donors to essentially buy a 10% share of LSU athletics. It will ultimately be profitable, and it will be such a flex to not just donate to the athletic department but own part of it.
LSU will argue it isn’t private equity, just a group of donors becoming more involved with the program.

You should be celebrating since you’re positive this is going to ruin LSU. What’s the problem since this isn’t going to work and will blow up in our faces? We take tons of recruits Alabama wants these days. Soon they’ll all be going back to Tuscaloosa.
Congrats
Congrats

quote:it would be against state law in Mississippi. I know Louisiana has different laws (they still call them Napoleonic??). If we pursued such a nonsensical thing, it would have to go through the RFP process and all that crap.

Wonder if this means LSU will finally have the money to pay us for Princewill and Harper.

It sucks when someone else starts doing shite to stay competitive, huh?
This is the future if NIL stays a thing. These rich dudes are going to start wanting a little ROI. You can't keep going to the well and expecting people to blindly cut checks.

It’s almost like no one has any idea what they’re talking about and LSU was never selling out to private equity. Crazy idea.
Give how remarkably wrong this board has been regarding LSU the past year I am expecting this to give LSU a huge competitive advantage

Somehow, this is Texas and their $343 million in athletic revenue's fault.

To be clear, if "doing shite to stay competitive" is the lynchpin that brings down the entire sport we've all followed for decades, because one random team in Louisiana can't win a football game, then yes, that does indeed suck.

I am very happy LSU is doing this. It isn’t good for the game, but the game is fubared anyway. It will be incredibly entertaining to watch this unfold. Like watching the World Series of Poker, only LSU is the stack of chips in the middle of the table.
LSU athletics have gone all in on Lane Kiffin. If he does not have major success in his first three seasons LSU is absolutely screwed. This deal is based on the assumption LSU will see increased revenue based on playoff success and richer TV contracts.
If that doesn’t happen LSU will find themselves in an even deeper hole. They won’t be able to afford to fire Kiffin. They will need to take out another pay day loan for another share of future earnings to pay players.
LSU is gambling their longterm future on Lane Kiffin. The pressure on him will be unlike anything he has experienced. He has a self admitted history of substance abuse. I hope for his sake hot yoga is enough to deal with the pressure.
If someone had posted five years ago that the long term future of LSU athletics rested on the shoulders of Lane Kiffin LSU fans would have lost their minds. Now they are defending it.

That's the problem with a system that has no rules.
It's how we ended up with coaches making $10-15M a year.

My God, are you watching young and the restless on the tube right now?
“Some random team in Louisiana ruining our beloved and sacred sport. Lordy, Lordy”
fricking idiots

That article says the plan is to:
If that's all it is - every other university already does this (including some athletic departments) so I'm unclear why this is being billed as revolutionary and one of a kind.

“The structure would allow LSU to own and control an LLC that can invest in companies that will generate revenue perpetually,” said another source.

Like it’s been stated multiple times-no one has the full and complete details.
I like Michigan State’s mega donor was present and was blown away by the idea and concept. Talked about Michigan State being approached by 40 PE firms and the school can’t go down that road. Said they have a similar concept to LSU but this was more advanced.
That’s so crazy LSU was never actually selling out to PE like the SECr financial committee insisted.

Based on the reports coming out now, it appears as though the usual suspects have YET AGAIN jumped the gun, wrung their hands, desperately wishcasted, and made a mountain out of a molehill.
Never change, folks.
